Both of these statutes seem to be predicated on the premise that whoever did the injury should compensate the sufferer or their loved ones for their suffering (Mckay et al., 2010). It would seem that the goal of this justice system is to ensure that no one is financially disadvantaged as a result of the crimes of others. For instance, according to the Law of the Salian Franks, if someone is slain, the person who committed the murder is obligated to provide reparation to the relatives of the deceased. Also, for example it is written in the Laws of Æthelbehrt, King of Kent, that if someone is wounded, the one who caused the damage shall provide compensation to the sufferer (Klingelsmith et al., 1920).
