Please answer one of the following questions:
1. How useful do you think Belbin's model of Team roles is to managers? Use
research evidence to discuss the possible advantages and disadvantages of
using this model to create successful teams.
。 Read about the purpose of Belbin's model of team roles.
• Look for evidence that it can be useful and explain how and when it might
be useful.
。 Also consider how this model might not always help predict group
performance.
。 What other factors need to be considered when creating a successful
team, and why?
。 Assess the weaknesses and critiques that have been written. For
example, Aritzeta, Swailes and Senior (2007) point to a number of critical
assessments of Belbin's work.

2. (a) Choose three different problems affecting group performance that can
occur when people work in teams and discuss how and when they might be
harmful to group performance; (b) Using research evidence and your own
logical arguments, suggest how you think managers might address these three
problems.
。 Answer both a and b.
。 Choose three challenges/problems. For example, social loafing,
evaluation apprehension, production blocking, group think. There are
many other potential challenges that can occur. Read beyond the lecture
slides.
。 Look at evidence of how such problems can be addressed by managers.
This might relate to how they organize or manage tasks and groups.
。 Please show evidence of critical thinking when answering this question -
avoid simply describing what you have read.
3. (a) Use research evidence to discuss the challenges of motivating a team, and
(b) provide suggestions for managers on how these challenges can be
managed.
。 Answer both a and b.
。 There are many models and theories of motivation - read around the
subject of motivation and use your understanding of how people and
teams are motivated. For example, expectancy theory of motivation,
equity theory, goal setting theory.
。 Think about the characteristics of a team - and individual differences. Is
everyone motivated in the same way by the same things?
。 What factors might affect the answer to this question? Discuss these
factors and use evidence to explain them.
Do not reproduce or regurgitate from the lectures. The essay must refer to the
subject area using material from academic publications found in academic journals.
Academic textbooks are also useful when answering these questions. You can also
provide examples of real-life practice where possible.
