1 page , double spaced Dance as Resistance still from New York University CUPSI Team - "Dance as Resistance". This assignment is intended to make you continue to think about the places in which social dance and choreography intersect, as well as where social dance can and has been used as a form of resistance to a dominating system, the place where culture and ideals are preserved, and a location for unbound self-expression. Watch the video ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8dP XljEuco&t=5s ) of a spoken word choreography by the New York University CUPSI team's performance of "Dance as Resistance." In this performance, they explore the importance of physical freedom and diversity in expressing cultural norms and behaviors. Watch the video at least 3 times and take note in your journals of what you see each time. Label your journal entry "Dance as Resistance." What becomes evident in each view? Are they specific lines in the poem? The way someone is moving? The mix of people? One performer in particular? Remember, it's your journal, and everything goes. After watching it 3 times for journalling, watch it a 4th time, and complete the tasks below. Turn in your answers as a word document on this assignment tab. Task #1: Choose two lines that clearly reflect the importance of social dance in transmitting what is important in a particular culture to future generations. Task #2: In your own words, how is what you are viewing "choreography"? Task #3: List 5 hashtags of what you perceive the performers, the choreography, the staging, the movement to be communicating. Be as descriptive as possible. Task #4: Create 3 hashtags describing the "resistance" that you see (these can be as long as you need them to be). Task #5: Choose one performer and create 2 hashtags that clearly describe how that performer in particular "embodies" resistance in their person or performance. This assignment is intended to address key assessments of critical thinking and social responsibility by using video content and descriptive language related to issues of resistance and embodiment in dance, particularly social manifestations of dance. The assignment is modeled after scholar and activist Amber Ortega-Perez, Palo Alto College, San Antonio, TX. Used with permission. Button Poetry (2018, December 15).
