In it you will investigate or extrapolate how an object can take on or represent an expression of culture through context and time. You will be creating a "Journal" for that artifact - tracing its significance as an expression of culture and connecting it to your personal culture. Consider yourself a "tour guide" of history, where you reflect on the history and the cultural relevance of your chosen artifact. You will also explore how it connects to the owner's experience in Canada. Feel free to be creative! There will be objects and artifacts that have a clear link from the past to the present, and there will be others which will need extrapolation and creativity. This "Journal" can take the form of: a photo essay a short piece of fiction, a short documentary an interview a multi-media slide show a format upon which you and your teacher have agreed. Step 1: Fill out the proposal sheet This is your brainstorming, and the chance for you to decide which artifact you will select. Step 2: Choose what form your ‘journal' will take; there should be a blend of images & written text As part of the written reflective component of your journal, make sure you respond to some of the issues raised in this unit regarding culture as an expression and how it relates to and affects your own cultural identity. What is the significance of cultural expressions? • How do cultural expressions contribute to a culture? How do cultural expressions represent a culture through time? • How do cultural expressions relate to you on a personal level? How has your culture influenced Canadian culture and, in turn, how has Canada influenced your culture? How has your culture influenced your personal perceptions, attitudes and behaviors? How might your artifact be viewed by the general public not connected to your culture? Step 3: Post a link to your "Journal of an Artifact" Step 4: Read through other posts; Complete the exit slip
