Question

1.

Saturated steam is produced at 8.0 MPa in an ideal Rankine cycle shown below

(turbine and pump work are isentropic). After leaving the high-pressure turbine at 6.0 MPa,

the saturated mixture is sent through a reheater at this pressure and exits as superheated

steam at 290°C. The saturated mixture exits the low-pressure turbine and condenses at 4.0

MPa to 250°C. The fluid is then pumped to 8.0 MPa and 260°C. (a) Sketch this cycle on a

TS diagram and label accordingly. (b) What is the thermal efficiency of this system? (c)

What is the flow rate needed to produce 3000 MWt? (d) Describe what should be done to

improve this system if saturated steam is still to be produced at 8.0 MPa.

For this problem, assume (1) heat addition/removal only takes place in the steam generator,

reheater, and condenser and (2) pressure changes only occur in the pump and turbines.
