Ans- procedure Gather a plastic scale of 15cm in size thermometer few small rubber band beakers hot plate a cork stopper tripod and tap water. Heat the 400 ml filled tap water beaker on a hot plate up to a temperature of 55-60°C. At both ends of the scale attach the rubber band. And at the top of the thermometer attach a stopper. When the water is at a temperature between 55°C to 60°C. place it over the gauze pad of the tripod. After getting permission from the instructor attaches a mercury tube provided by the instructor and a thermometer to the plastic scale. Attach the plastic thermometer and scale setup to the tripod with the help of clamped ring stand. Using the clamp of the ring stand to lower the scale thermometer and tube system into the beaker containing pre-heated water placed over the tripod in step (iv) Left it for 2 minutes then record the temperature and position of mercury surfaces. And calculate the gap between the two plugs. Now lower the temperature by adding ice now stir the water until the ice melts. Left it for 2 minutes to achieve equilibrium. Record the temperature and position of mercury surfaces. And calculate the gap between the two plugs. Repeat the above process five times.
