2. (Test intermediate understanding of optical waveguides and modes) Consider a symmetric planarwaveguide, as shown in Figure 1. The core has a thickness of 1 µm (i.e. in the y-dimension). You may assume that the wave guide is infinite in the x-dimension (define your layers and simulation window properly). Consider wave propagation in the z-dimension with a wavelength of 1550nm.(10 marks) a) Calculate the number of modes which are supported by this system if the core layer is silicon nitride (n₂ = 1.99). You may assume that the cladding thicknesses are essentially infinite in they-dimension. Use the equation provided below. (3 marks) b) Calculate the number of modes which are supported by the system if the core layer is silicon(n₂ = 3.48). (3 marks) c) Plot the mode and intensity profile for the fundamental modes for both cases using RSoft and comment on the comparison. (4 marks)
