Question

20" Reinf. as shown only represents a generic layout of reinforcement bars and does not represent an actual rebar layout 18" As Notes: fc = 4,000 psi Grade 80 relnf. Ybeam= 150 pcf 2.5" For the beam section shown, please answer the following: (a) If the stress in the tension reinforcement is fs = 50 ksi when the beam section reaches its nominal moment strength (Mn), determine the amount of steel in the beam section based on this condition. (b) Since the beam of part (a) is an over-reinforced section and not allowed per AC1318, calculate the maximum area of steel reinforcement that would ensure that the section is a tension-controlled section. (c) For part (b), calculate the design flexural strength of the beam section. (d) Using loading combination case (1.2D+1.6L), if the service Dead Load is WDL = (beam self-weight + 1 klf) and the beam has a simple-span (i.e., simply-supported) of 30'-0", determine the maximum service live load (WL) that the beam can carry.
