Question

A closed, rigid container of volume 0.5 m3 is placed on a hot plate. When it is first placed on the hotplate (state 1), the container holds a two-phase mixture

of saturated liquid water and saturated water vapor at a pressure of 1 bar and a quality of 0.5. After heating, the pressure in the container is p2 = 1.5bar. The rigid container is then heated (to state 3) to where the container holds only saturated vapor. 1) Sketch a T-v diagram for water and mark (and label) each of the three states on the T-v diagram. 2) Draw a line/curve/shape on the T-v diagram connecting the states and indicating the process that the system underwent from state 1 to state 3 3) Sketch a P-v diagram for water and mark (and label) each of the states on the P-v diagram. 4) Draw a line/curve/shape on the P-v diagram connecting the states and indicating the process that the system underwent from state 1 to state 3 5) Determine the temperature (°C) of the system at each of the three states. 6) Determine the mass of vapor present (in kg) at each state 7) Fill in the blanks for the following ASSUMPTIONS about the system and the process a) The water in the container is a (open/closed/mixed)system b) States 1,2 and 3 (are/are not)equilibrium states c) The volume of the container (remains constant/expands/contracts) d) The ideal gas law (can/cannot).be applied to the water va por in this process.
