Eventually, COVID-19 will fade away and be remembered as a terrible event in human history but hopefully not nearly as terrible as another virus related disease smallpox. Smallpox was a seriously contagious disease caused by the variola virus. People who had smallpox had a fever and a distinctive, progressive skin rash resulting in deaths of about 30 percent of the people that contracted the disease. I recently watched a show about the history of small pox and I thought some of the facts it contained were extremely interesting and somewhat controversial. So much so, that I later did a little research and read this article I found about the rise and fall of small pox on the history.com website. https://www.history.com/news/the-rise-and- fall-of-smallpox B While this website article is interesting, it did not have the same level of detail that I took away from the televised history. Here are a few tidbits I took from the history of smallpox: 1. It is believed that smallpox was the primary disease brought from Europe that resulted in the reduction of the indigenous population of North and South America by up to a staggering 90%. 2. Smallpox is one of history's deadliest diseases and is estimated to have killed more than 300 million people since 1900 alone. 3. In 1796, an English doctor, Edward Jenner, realized that while the disease seems to affect every segment of society, milk maids that contracted another disease called cowpox, did not contract smallpox. He performed an experiment on an 8-year-old boy where he injected with with cowpox then later he injected him with smallpox. Fortunately the results were exactly as he had hoped and the boy did not contract smallpox. Doctor Jenner was able to conclude that a person could be protected from smallpox without having to be directly exposed to it. This was the world's first successful vaccine. 4. The word "vaccine" was created by Edward Jenner. The word comes from the Latin word vacca, meaning cow. For this discussion I want you to think about these 4 facts and find one interested virus related fact of your own.
