Question

(a) Three FM signals (Signal 1, Signal 2 and Signal 3) have the following properties. Signal 1: fm = 20kHz, fc = 200kHz, Ec= 10v, B = 1.6 Signal 2: fm = 10kHz, fc = 150kHz, Ec = 8v, B = 1 Signal 3: fm = 5kHz, fc = 80kHz, Ec = v, ß = 0.8 (where fm is message frequency, fc is carrier frequency, Ec is carrier amplitude and ß is the modulation index) Compare the performance of both signals in terms of Carson's bandwidth.Using the Bessel table given in table A2a, sketch the frequency spectrum indicating all relevant details.

(b)Describe the operation of three different types of transmission lines typically used for high frequency circuit design. Compare the advantages and disadvantages of each one.(6 marks) (c)With respect to high frequency circuit design, explain three types of losses in transmission lines and suggest ways to reduce each type. (d)Sketch the diagram of the OSI layers and state the function of each layer.
