APPENDIX B: SUGGESTED ESSAY STRUCTURE AND SUB-HEADINGS Here is a suggested structure for your essay using four sub-headings: 1. Introduction Use this section to briefly introduce your topic and signpost your

reader to what is being presented in the rest of the essay. Ensure that you provide a definition of the graduate labour market and explain its key characteristics, drawing on relevant academic literature. 2. Chosen Role and Job Market Sector Begin this section by outlining the specific graduate-level role you have chosen for the essay and tell us about the context of the job market sector in which it sits. [Example - HR Business Partner in the Manufacturing sector in the UK). Consider questions such as: what does the graduate labour market look like for this role and sector? What kinds of people work in this sector? What do they do on a daily basis? What skills and attributes do they need? Why are these skills and attributes important? Showcase your chosen role and job market sector thoroughly before you focus on the challenges, otherwise it will be more difficult for you to construct a meaningful discussion and make your arguments flow between sections 2 and 3. 3. Challenges of Chosen Role and Job Market Sector Now discuss and critically analyse challenges you have identified through your literature search. Relate them specifically to the job role and job market sector you showcased in the previous section. In this section you might like to consider which of these challenges might pose the greatest difficulties for a successful graduate career and explain why. 4. Conclusion Use this section to briefly reiterate key points, supported with academic literature, and bring your discussion to a scholarly close. REMEMBER: This essay should be written entirely in the third person - the focus here is not on you and your specific career choices - it is about a specific graduate-level role and job market sector. It does make sense, however, to focus on a graduate role and job market sector you are genuinely interested in researching and exploring further.
