I confirm that this is my final submission and that the work is to the best of my ability. Enter date: in your designated session *The published submission date and time is final with zero tolerance on lateness. Work submitted within 5 working days after the submission deadline will receive a grade capped at Low 3d. Work received later than this will be capped at ZERO. Module Learning Outcomes Being Assessed: Knowledge and understanding Demonstrate an understanding of the organisation of the construction industry Develop solutions/designs for simple civil engineering projects, utilising computer aided design software. Begin to relate civil engineering to the wider global context, recognising its importance in social, environmental and economic issues. Skills, qualities and attributes Prepare by adaptation design solutions that accord with engineering principles. Communicate clearly in graphical, oral and written forms. Demonstrate a range of transferable skills that will be of value in the world of work. Work effectively both individually and as part of a team. 50%/nContext The client, NTU Estates & Resources, is looking to develop a piece of land adjacent to the north-east comer of the Arkwright Building on the NTU campus-see maps of the site location, below. Fig. 1: General Site Location (Image: Google Maps) Fig. 3: Arkwright Lawn Fig. 4: Arkwright Lawn S Fig. 2: Detail of Site Location (Image: Google Maps) Fig. S: Utilities Works on Arkwright Lawn/nClient Requirements: Your designs must include or address all of the following requirements raised by the client: A small car park adjacent to the NE comer of Arkwright Building, with a minimum of 4 spaces for Blue badge holders (wheelchair/disabled users) • Covered cycle storage facilities for at least 15 bicycles, in addition to facilities already provided. • Small toilet and shower block facility for those cycling to the University. • Suitable pedestrian and wheelchair access from all the new facilities to the Arkwright Building. • Sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) for the new hard-standing areas to be provided (surface water cannot simply go into the existing drainage system, as this is already at full capacity). Other Considerations: • • Safe access from Shakespeare Street/South Sherwood Street into new facilities is paramount, bearing in mind all other users of the space. • Minimum impact on the environment, particularly during the construction phase which is likely to be during Summer 2024. Materials chosen, and the design, must be in keeping/sympathetic to the surrounding area and conform to the latest regulations. Additional Project Information: • Utility services connections (gas, clean water & electricity) for the Toilet and Shower Block-the existing services run N-S through the grass area (as indicated by inspection chamber covers on the site. See also photos above, taken during recent gas main replacement works). Your design will need to show the proposed route taken for the service connections. Other utility services (foul water, drainage)-existing services run alongside South Sherwood Street. It should be noted that it will not be suitable to allow the drainage of surface water, particularly from any hard-standing area, to run straight into the existing combined drainage/foul water pipe under the east side footpath. Alternative arrangements will need to be considered as the existing pipe does not have the capacity to deal with the additional volume of water, particularly as peak times/flows. T Trees - the client is keen to retain as many trees as possible on the site. Water table-boreholes suggest the water table is, on average, 1.5 m below the ground level. As above, this should be considered when selecting suitable foundations and considering construction activities. Existing ground conditions site investigation and soil testing reveal that the soil adjacent to the Arkwright building is well-drained and has a good bearing capacity. This should be considered when selecting suitable foundations and considering construction activities./nWork required This will be and a GROUP work, but all members of the group must actively participate in the work in order to gain the group grade. The module team reserve the right to award individual grades where there is not an equal contribution to the group work. This assessment is worth 14% of the module grade. Group Design Poster - A1 Paper Size A group presentation, using suitable and professional written and visual communication techniques, to be submitted in your timetabled session on weak commencing Take care when using images of scanned drawings, as lines/features can often appear faint. It is your responsibility to ensure the images you present can be clearly seen, including the tutors grading the work! The aim of the poster is for you to explain your group design, and how the elements of the design work to make this an effective design. You should also explain how your design meets the client brief, and why your design is, in your opinion, the optimum solution for this particular site. Individual Contribution to Group Work Each group (including all members) will need to meet on a weekly basis, taking minutes and making notes as appropriate. These are needed, just like a project in industry, to enable the coordination of all members, planning the individual and group tasks that need completing to meet key deadlines. Records must be kept (and uploaded to the Dropbox on NOW) of group meetings held and of individual work completed/contributed, as evidence of your individual contribution. Each group member is expected to chair at least 1 meeting of the group and submit this in their submission. A template for meeting minutes is given on NOW under "Assessment 2". Deliverables/submission details Group Design Poster: A poster printed on A1 paper and bought to your timetabled session. Individual Contribution to the Work: A record of your individual contribution to the group work. This must include: • At least one set of meeting minutes that you chaired and any other notes you took from other meetings Your sketches of your initial individual design for the project. Any other appropriate research or materials you contributed to the project. List of resources relevant to this assessment .
