ASSIGNMENT: In this assignment the student will demonstrate the use of mindful self-compassion as they assess their own current and past stress management strategies and the impact on their psychosocial health.

Recommended concepts to consider are the three elements of self-compassion, distress tolerance skills and emotional regulation skills. Students will then describe their own stage of change and barriers to change that exist at this time. Finally, the student will set SMART goals that will facilitate a positive improvement in self-care and stress management, using evidence-based stress management strategies. TASKS: 1. In 1-2 well-written pages, describe your past and present stress management strategies, both positive and negative. Consider the impact of online or in-person college learning, and the results of the quiz you took in Week 2. Explain how your stress management strategies have helped or hindered your performance and psychosocial health. Finish with a paragraph outlining what you would like to change. (8 marks) 2. Write 1 page where you review the stages of change and assess what you believe you are currently able to commit to. Identify the obstacles that might prevent you from changing maladaptive coping strategies. You are being graded on your ability to honestly assess yourself, not on your ability to change. (5 marks) 3. Complete 3 SMART goals for yourself this semester related to stress management/self-care. Incorporate the philosophy and practices behind mindful self-compassion. For each goal, list 3 strategies you are going to implement. Make sure you include all parts of the SMART goal. (3 goals x 4 marks each = 12 marks) 4. There is a demonstration of mindful self-compassion practice ideas, a planned use of DBT Basic Distress Tolerance Concepts and application of other self-evaluation activities or CBT stress management strategies. Ensure you are specific in the use of techniques such as distraction and self-soothing, for example. (5 marks) Examples will be discussed and worked through in class. BEFORE you hand your assignment in, make sure you review the rubric. Have you used APA 7 formatting? Have you cited any references in text AND provided a Reference Page? The Rubric will guide you to achieving the best grade you can - use it!
