Aysa Yilmaz Miss.G ENG4-ind-23-24 21 November 2023 Unit 3%: oral presentation Jeanne Mance: A Founding Mother's Legacy in Montreal Hello, respected local government leaders. I appreciate the chance to speak

today. I'm here to promote remembering an extraordinary person from history, Jeanne Mance. In 1642, on the island of Montreal, a courageous woman alongside Sieur de Maisonneuve cofounded the city we cherish today. Her story, though often overlooked, is a tale of resilience, dedication, and selflessness, deserving of a day dedicated to her legacy. Introduction: Jeanne Mance, born on November 12, 1606, in Langres, France, faced early health challenges, surviving a serious illness at the age of 16 (Noel). Despite being born into a bourgeois family, she chose a path less trodden, dedicating herself to nursing and aiding victims of war and plague in the 1630s (Noel) (The Canadian Encyclopedia). Her life took a turn when she responded to a call to become a missionary in the New World, becoming a member of the Société de Notre-Dame de Montréal. It was during this time that she forged close ties with influential individuals, such as Father Nicolas Dolebeau and Claude de Bullion, who would play pivotal roles in shaping her destiny (Noel). Early Life and Spiritual Call: Jeanne Mance's early experiences in nursing and her response to the call of missionary work in New France became the foundation of her unwavering commitment. This commitment was fueled by stories of the prodigious vocation of other women, such as Mrs. de La Peltrie, who had been miraculously healed after promising to consecrate her life for Canada (Noel). Founding Hôtel-Dieu Hospital and Montreal: In 1641, Jeanne Mance, with authorization from her Jesuit spiritual advisor, left Langres for Paris to seek the means to contribute to the missions in Canada (Noel). In Paris, she met influential people, including Claude de Bullion, who proposed the creation of a hospital in New France, promising the necessary funds for its establishment (Noel). Jeanne Mance's eloquence and determination inspired confidence in potential donors and colonists. She played a pivotal role in the Society of Our Lady of Montreal's missionary project to turn the island of Montreal into a hub for the evangelization of Indigenous peoples (The Canadian Encyclopedia) (McCord Museum). Arriving in Montreal in 1642, she took on multiple roles, managing provisions, founding the Hôtel-Dieu hospital, and becoming the colony's treasurer (The Canadian Encyclopedia) (McCord Museum). Her efforts were crucial during the challenging early years of the Montreal colony, facing threats from the Iroquois and a dwindling population (McCord Museum). Personal Challenges and Miraculous Healing: Despite her dedication, Jeanne Mance faced personal challenges. In 1657, she suffered a fall that left her with a broken arm and dislocated wrist. This incident had serious consequences, leading her to consider having herself replaced at the head of the hospital. However, she waited for the return of Sieur de Maisonneuve, who left for France in 1655. Despite her own frail health, she gave all her reserve money when Maisonneuve had to go to France to recruit soldiers (Noel). Legacy and Passing: Jeanne Mance's legacy endures through her founding of the Hôtel-Dieu hospital and her instrumental role in the survival of Montreal (The Canadian Encyclopedia) (McCord Museum). In 1658, she returned to France but miraculously healed, allowing her to continue her mission upon her return to Montreal (Noel). Her will, written from May 1669 to February 1672, bequeathed her heart to the people of Montreal. She passed away on June 18, 1673, leaving a lasting impact on the city she helped build (Noel). Jeanne Mance Day: A Call to Action: Jeanne Mance's story is one of indomitable spirit, dedication, and service to others. Establishing Jeanne Mance Day would not only honor a historical figure but also serve as a source of inspiration for future generations. It would provide an annual opportunity for Montrealer's to reflect on the city's beginnings and the contributions of this extraordinary woman. Conclusion: In summary, Jeanne Mance's tale showcases the unbeatable strength of a woman who laid the groundwork for Montreal's founding. Her commitment, toughness, and altruism set her apart as a real role model, deserving of acknowledgment and memory. By setting a Jeanne Mance Day, we wouldn't just be paying tribute to a history stalwart, but also inspiring tomorrow's leaders. Let us remember and celebrate Jeanne Mance, whose legacy has left an indelible mark on the city we proudly call home. Thank you. Works Cited Noel, Jan. "Jeanne Mance."
