BECE 102 Assessment 3 Rubric Task Description: Analyse audio visual samples of children's voices and identify those with additional language needs according to the criteria discussed in class (summary below). You will be provided with five (5) pre-recorded discussion/s with children who have different educational needs and rates of development. Write a report of your observations (approximately 200 words per child). Clearly identify any children you consider may need additional support or referral to a speech and language therapist. Draw on relevant literature, including the Developmental Milestones, to support your analysis. Criteria for determining speech and language delays There are a number of criteria that can be used in assessing speech or language delay, including the following: • Not using gestures, such as point or waving bye-bye Preferring gestures over vocalisation to communicate (by 18 months old) • Trouble imitating sounds ⚫ Trouble understanding simple verbal requests Imitating speech or actions rather than producing words or phrases spontaneously (by two years of age) Only saying some sounds or words repeatedly - cannot use oral language to communicate more than their immediate needs (by two years of age) • Cannot follow simple directions (by two years of age) • Having an unusual tone of voice (such as raspy or nasal sounding by two years of age)
