Background - this is the area of research you are exploring and this must be discussed in the context of the organisation/society. Context - not just details of the organisation/society but the reason the organisation/society is now a site for investigation - links to background. 1.1 Research argument-'own assumptions' - what is currently happening? Your own assumptions i.e. what are you observing/understanding about the specific issue must be translated into a research argument. Describe what the current organisation/society position is i.e. what is going on in the organisation/society e.g. the problem. Describe how the current organisation/society position relates to what the literature are saying i.e. what is currently being said about the area of research you're looking at. This is where the literature comes in. No references to be older than 5/6 years - this is to identify the current debates and critiques e.g. what is currently being discussed, debated, critiqued about your research argument in the literature. The literature must support your assumptions i.e. develop the assumptions/observations into a research argument. 1.2 Problem definition - define the research argument as a problem. The research argument is then discussed as a research problem i.e. problematise your research. - - Describe why it is a problem and discuss it in the context of your organisation. To problematise is to question the current authors views - 'the prevailing tradition or convention' - does everyone (authors) agree with the same interpretation (literature sources here can be older than last 5 years, as they will no doubt address relevant theories you may wish to propose using)./nProblematising is questioning the assumptions of the prevailing tradition that the authors are describing or discussing and then synthesising what the authors views are and how these differ. This approach assists in doing two things - 1) looking at the current issues in an organisation/society setting i.e. case studies, and 2), helps to develop the skills of 'knowledge synthesis'. 1.3 Significance of the research - why important? This is a culmination of the above argument and problematisation - discuss why the research is significant-driven by the opposing views, but from the organisation/society perspective. Essentially, the significance is the importance of your research, so what can your research tell us that we don't already know. 1.4 Research question and objectives. The research question is 'this is what is going to be researched' and the objectives are 'this is how the question will be researched'. Research question must be focused on the specifics i.e. current position. Research question and objectives must connect to the previous sections - it needs to make sense.
