BIOE 232 - Biochemistry You may work in pairs. Be sure to put both names on the top of answer sheet. Spring 2023-2024 1. For the following DNA strand: ASSIGNMENT 2 ATTTTAAGCTAAGCTCCA a. Write the complementary strand, b. Calculate the number of hydrogen bonds existing between the strands, c. Specify the 5' and 3' ends for each strand. 2. Draw and label the three parts and the bonds of Deoxyadenosine diphosphate. 3. The melting points of a series of 20-carbon fatty acids are; 20:0: 70.6 °C; 20:2 (A11, 14): -8.3 °C; 20:4 (A5,8,11,14): -43.4. a. Draw all the structures of the fatty acids. b. Correlate their melting points with their structures. Explain briefly. c. At high temperatures, which one of these fatty acids will enter to the cell membrane. 4. For a typical vertebrate cell with a membrane potential of 0.050 V (inside negative), what is the free-energy change for transporting 1 mol of Ca+² from the cell into the blood at 37 °C? Assume the concentration of Ca+2 inside the cell is 145 mM and in blood plasma it is 25 mM. Does this transport take place spontaneously or not? (R= 8.315 J/mol.K)
