There is one aspect of industrial hygiene that is not limited to industrial environments - indoor air quality. Indoor air quality, as the name implies, refers to any indoor space. In any building or any area that can be considered indoors, the air quality can fall victim to one of a wide variety of contaminants or problems that can make people sick. In an article I found on the WebMD website about sick-building syndrome (https://www.webmd.com/men/features/sick-building-syndrome B) I extracted the paragraph below: Actually, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (www.cdc.gov/niosh B) prefers the term "Indoor Air Quality." If 20% of the work force has symptoms -- including watering eyes; hoarseness; headaches; dry, itchy skin; dizziness; nausea; heart palpitations; miscarriages; shortness of breath; nosebleeds; chronic fatigue; mental fogginess; tremors; swelling of legs or ankles; and cancer-- the building may be labeled a "sick building." The telling factor is if the symptoms ease when workers are at home or on vacation. The article goes on to list a wide variety of things that can result in poor indoor air quality. It surprised me how many ways air quality can affect a person's health. For this discussion I want you to think about indoor spaces other than an industrial workplace. Some examples include hospitals, hotel rooms, cruise ship cabins, navy ships, submarines, and airplanes. Step 1: Post your response to the following 3 prompts Prompt 1: Identify an indoor space that is not an industrial workplace that could fall victim to poor air quality. For the space you selected, identify one or more ways the air quality in that space could become a health concern. You can use one of the examples listed above or identify something different. Prompt 2: Search the web for an example of an actual poor indoor air quality issue that made people sick. If you are unable to search for an example, you may discuss one that you recall hearing about. you can use an example related to the space you identified in your prompt 1 response or use any example. Step 2: Post replies to at least 2 of your classmates. Your reply must offer one way they could improve their response to the discussion prompts. Note that you will not be able to see your classmates posts until you post your Step 1 responses. Post your initial response (Step 1) by FRIDAY at 11:59pm. Post your replies to your peers (Step 2) by Sunday at 11:59pm. HOW TO... Reply to a Discussion Prompt H Q Search O E ENG A 5:13 PM 4/26/2024
