"Chapter 02 Paper: Exploring Family Traditions " Number of Points: 40 Number of Pages: 4 Family and personal life changed greatly during the twentieth century. Scholars have examined changes in individuals' lives over time and how those changes are related to historical events. Since ancient times, family traditions/practices (religious or otherwise) have been indispensable and integral in every society and culture. Individuals experience and learn about their respective family traditions through socialization: a lifelong process through which individuals acquire culture, develop their sense of self, and become functioning members of society. Family traditions bring family members together and rejuvenate the functioning of the family. Family traditions preserve the "order" in the family. In this paper, you will be looking into your family traditions and heritage and examining them from a sociological perspective. People worldwide celebrate various festivals and holidays, such as Easter, Christmas, the 4th of July, Diwali, Holi, Hanukkah, Passover, Kwanzaa, Eid-ul-Fitr, Dia de Los Muertos, New Year's, Full Moon, graduation, etc. As well as other traditions, such as child-rearing practices, parenting trends, dating, selection of mates, etc. These traditions and practices are passed from generation to generation relatively unchanged, but what happens when families themselves undergo many changes due to technological advancements, economic issues, and societal shifts? Pick four family traditions/practices you and your family celebrate every year and describe them in detail. How does your family celebrate these traditions? How did these celebrations become part of your family traditions? Will you continue these family traditions and pass them down to the next generation? Alternatively, will you create new traditions for yourself and your nuclear family? How have societal changes influenced the continuity of family traditions? What functions do family traditions perform according to you? Please discuss your responses critically using sociological perspectives in this paper! What does it mean to think critically? Here are some key points to keep in mind: We must revisit and evaluate our society and culture's values, beliefs, behaviors, and traditions. We need to be aware of our place and time in our society and culture. To think critically, one must develop a reflective analysis. Such an analysis requires that we be skeptical, not in the sense that we do not believe anything we see but rather that we question what is seen as fixed belief systems now that we know there are possible alternatives to these beliefs. A reflective analysis requires that we challenge dominant ideas and popular notions regarding solutions to social problems. Please follow the instructions, think out of the box, and enjoy the assignment!
