Cultural Considerations

Imagine working with a client who makes frequent derogatory comments about people

of a specific gender, race, colour, religion, ethnicity, nationality, or a historically

marginalized minority. As someone who is committed to social justice, and, as a mental

health professional who works with clients and colleagues of that particular group,

and/or, as someone who belongs to or identifies with that group, you feel deeply

offended. Examine in what circumstances you might challenge, and even confront your

client, and, in what circumstances you might remain silent and defer. For instance,

would you respond any differently to a client you are treating for, say, a major depressive

disorder, a client with PTSD, or a client with a pedophilic disorder? Clarify any additional

information, therapeutic issues, and/or relational dynamics that might be relevant in

deciding whether and how to respond. Explain your perspective and rationale.
