In my research I have learned much about black women's treatment and activities during the atlantic slave trade, slavery and the Civil War era. Women's experiences during this time was nique, as they faced both racial and gendered oppression. They were often victims of gender-based violence at the hands of white men and other enslaved men. However, despite the hardships they faced, they were able to live meaningful lives. Their will to continue in the face of hardships began to foster culture and give power to the African American community. During slavery, women could raise the status of their family by having children with white men. While this may not seem ideal, it shows both the struggles and dedication these women had to give their families better lives. In addition, black women took advantage of a legal fight against enslavement, called freedom suits. Two notable black women helped fight for the freedom of several slaves, and were successful. A key component of freedom suits was oral history, an African American cultural method of passing down history, most likely kept alive by the matriarch in the family. Oral history was considered legal evidence to advocate for the rights of freedom. Black women also became the forefront of black and women's liberation after facing religious persecution. In the Civil War era, the Anglican doctrine was discriminated against and many black religious communities felt this threat. A group of women used the opportunity to protest their religious persecution to also protest racial and gendered discrimination, leading into the early forefront of women's liberation and the abolitionist movement. The Civil War era, however, not all good and many black women found themselves victims of brutal sexual violence at the hands of white supremacists. The anger of the white community due to the end of slavery was largely taken out on black women, who were met with beatings and horrible assaults. 2nd peer response (50 words) My Thesis is that In the early to mid-1800s, the political climate became tense for several reasons. One major factor was the issue of slavery, which had been a contentious topic since the founding of the United States. As the country expanded westward, the question of whether new states would allow slavery or not created intense debates and conflicts between the North and the South. This eventually led to the Civil War, a devastating conflict that further heightened tensions and deepened divisions within the nation. The political climate during this time was characterized by passionate arguments, growing tensions, and ultimately, the struggle for the future of the United States. This just shows the larger implication that Blacks still are not fully accepted in the world today, but have progressed and fought for hundreds of years. I've come to the conclusion that during the Civil War and the early to mid-1800s, African Americans refused to sit idly by in the face of oppression. They fought back through rebellions like Nat Turner's and Stono, sending a powerful message of resistance. Some black individuals even offered their assistance to their oppressors in hopes of gaining freedom or reuniting with their families. African American women played crucial roles in the American Revolution, fighting on the frontlines and supporting the military efforts. Being an ally of African Americans during this time was not without risks, as supporters of abolitionism faced social ostracization and threats. These acts of resistance and the contributions of black individuals and allies shaped the political climate of the era. This relates to the class because although times have been extremely hard for blacks, we have never wavered in the face of adversity, demand to be equal, and will never settle for less.
