Directions before you begin writing: Step 1: Locate and select a character example of "abnormal psychology” in a movie. The character should exhibit signs and symptoms of a psychological disorder. Think about movies you have seen (please select appropriate movies) that have characters who exhibit signs and symptoms of psychological / psychiatric pathology. Choose your movie and character carefully - make it challenging. Your character MUST have a psychological diagnosis (as identified by the criteria in the DSM5). *Movies that are off-limits to write about: A Beautiful Mind, Parks of Being a Wallflower, American Sniper, Shutter Island, Batman / Dark Knight, Fight Club, and Split. Step 2: Watch the movie and look for the signs, symptoms, and criteria of psychological pathology in your chosen character. Next, make a list of these symptoms to "prove" that the character has a psychiatric diagnosis. List the character's behavioral and emotional examples, statements that the character makes, etc. For example, is the character depressed, schizophrenic, bipolar, have a personality disorder (narcissistic, antisocial, histrionic, borderline), or have substance disorder or PTSD? In other words, what are their psychological symptoms, and what type of diagnosis do the symptoms point you toward assigning for your chosen character? Step 3: Refer to the DSM5 to diagnose your character. Explain and describe the character's symptoms and include all of the diagnostic information / explanations. Research and look through the criteria needed for your diagnosis and double check your character's manifestations of the signs and symptoms. Incorporate research to help you describe the diagnosis you are assigning to your character. You must use at least two different scholarly (published) reference sources and have at least 5 in-text citations in your final paper. You must also use the criteria listed in the DSM5 to diagnose your character. List all of the sources on a works cited page (including the DSM5). The DSM5 (from Psychiatry Online) can be located by going to: • Beaman Library •Electronic Resources • In Search Databases by Subject, select Psychology ⚫ Scroll down and select "Psychiatry online” • Select DSM5 Step 4: Re-watch the movie clips that prove your character's diagnosis. Double check your notes for accuracy. Re-check the diagnostic criteria. Step 5: Write a 5+ page paper describing your character and their psychological diagnosis along with a treatment plan and prognosis. Have a cover page, use in-text citations (at least 5 in your paper), and have a reference page (use at least 2 scholarly (published) reference sources, not including the DSM5 - which should be used and listed on your reference page as well). See below for paper guidelines. The Final Assessment / Diagnosis Paper should include the following information / sections: Part one: What movie did you select? What character did you select and why? What is your primary diagnosis of this character? What is your evidence to prove this diagnosis? List all of the criteria (behaviors, emotions expressed, quotes, etc.) to prove your diagnosis using the DSM5. Be very detailed and descriptive. How did you come to this conclusion? Include all of the diagnostic information for the diagnosis. Remember, your movie character must exhibit signs and symptoms of a psychological disorder. Refer to and reference the criteria described in the DSM5 for an accurate diagnosis of your character. To appropriately diagnose your character according to the DSM5, not only include the character's primary diagnosis, but also describe any health concerns that contribute to their diagnosis and psychosocial issues (for example, housing problems, economic problems, relationship problems). Part two: Create a provisional treatment plan for this character. For example, if you were their psychiatrist or counselor, how would you treat this character as a client / patient? What would you focus on in counseling? Would you recommend any medication? If so, what and why? Would you promote group or family therapy for this character? Why or why not? Would this client / patient need psychiatric hospitalization? Be detailed and specific. Part three: What is their prognosis (outlook for good psychological health in the future)? Can they live a psychologically happy and healthy life in the future after treatment? What is the probability of relapse? What does their future look like? What treatments should they continue? What things / people / situations should they avoid? What will help them stay healthy?
