Directions for creating a professional references: Create a list of 3-5 professional references with at least two work references and one academic reference (or one work reference and two academic

references) using a word document. Your educational reference should be an instructor at YTI Career Institute that can speak best about your current abilities. Attach your references to this assignment for grading by due date discussed in class. When choosing references, think of people who know your work or training experience and will comment favorably on it. Examples include: Direct Supervisors • Department Managers Company Owners Volunteer Supervisors • Teachers ● ● ● Military Instructors If you include personal references, attempt to pick individuals with reputable positions in the business or larger community. Examples include: • Business Owners • Professionals • Educators • Personal Friends • Elected Officials (avoid party label) . Community Leaders • Family Friends Always request permission to use a person as a reference. If you are unsure if they will give you a good reference, ASK "Would you be able to give me a good reference on my work performance at your company?" If the answer is no, or is qualified, use someone else in the company or go to another source. For business references only, ask for a letter of reference to "To Whom It May Concern." By doing so, they make their written comments available during an interview. As a result, they might receive fewer telephone requests for information. For each reference, you need the following information: • Name . Title ● Company • Address • Business Telephone Number Under almost no circumstances should the following be used as references: • Relatives • Church Leaders Social Workers • Case Managers ● Counselors • Parole Officers Give out reference sheets only as they are requested. This usually takes place during an interview. Volunteer them if they are not asked for during the interview.
