6 - 7 pages long. Essays must be typed and double-spaced, in 12-point font (preferably Times Roman) and left justified with 1-inch margins. You must include a title page that includes the title of your essay, student and course number, date, and the name of the professor. Your essay must include a bibliography. You may use the American Psychological Association Style (APA). The title page and bibliography do not count towards the 6-7-page requirement, so you need to write 6 - 7 pages of actual text and then add your cover page and bibliography. Extensions and Late Penalties The essay is due on November 17th, 2023, at the beginning of class. Assignment extensions are granted only in cases of genuine need (e.g.: illness). A physicians' letter will be required, stating the duration of the illness. Requests for extensions must be made prior to the deadline. Three per cent per day will be deducted from assignments handed in late without prior approval of the professor (INCLUDING weekends). Case Study in Ethnic Identity: Describe the shared features that characterize an Ethnic population. 3. What are the main systems used for reckoning descent and how are these linked to different Modes of Production (E.G. agriculture, horticulture, industrialism)? 4. Discuss some of the main theoretical approaches applied by sociologists. 5. Discuss the findings of developmental sociologists working in the third world as they pertain to culture change and the global economy. 6. Certain theorists stand out in the history of sociology (E.G. Comte, Spencer, Durkheim). Select one of these famous theorists and explain their contribution to the field of sociology. 7. Sociologists study groups in society. Describe some of the chief groups and their characteristics. Provide examples. 8. Compare and contrast ways of understanding race, racialization, and ethnicity. Discuss how the concepts of race and ethnicity help or hinder in explaining inequality in different societies. Explore if these patterns have changed over time in different societies. 15. What are the main tenets of Marxist theory? Discuss the impact that the works of Karl Marx and other Marxist scholars had in the field of sociology. 16. How is social change possible? What are the different routes to social change? Discuss the legal, cultural, electoral, and social movements within Canadian society presented in class and analyze what sociologists have stated in this context. 17. Compare and contrast the different definitions of social class. Discuss how the concept of social class helps or hinders in explaining inequality in different societies. 18. Discuss the differences between sex and gender, analyzing how gender inequality structures inequality and how those patterns of inequality have altered over time and what role has sexuality played within these patterns of inequality?
