Question

Figure Q7 shows a section of a diesel engine. The connecting rod AB is known to be uniform with a weight of 78.5N. The connecting rod at one end, A is attached to a fixed support, and at the other end is connected to a wheel of weight 117.7N and diameter 400 mm, by means of pins at points B and C. The rod is kept in a stationary position by means of a spring (k = 800 N/m)attached at D. If the arrangement is perturbed by displacing B by 25 mm in a downward direction, and then restored. What is the period of vibration and the maximum velocity experienced at point B? Assuming the pin at C is removed such that the wheel can now rotate freely about B. Compute the period of vibration and the maximum velocity experienced at point B under this condition. Compare and comment on the two sets of values you obtained.
