Question

FINAL PROJECT GIS At Work Using your skill and knowledge of GIS you are required to develop a GIS project that explores an idea you find interesting. Guidelines Your project

should not be a map. Rather it should have a map or some maps as a final output. However, the work should be based on some form of geographical analysis. Use the core concepts of geography to decide what matters, and what does not: analyze do not simply depict. Rules 1. No human subject research allowed. This means no interviews, consultations or surveys. 2. No group work. 3. All data and supporting theories must be the product of primary survey or research from cited sources. Metadata and sources must be provided for all materials used. 4. All data are subject to criticism and commentary on grounds of credibility, accuracy, and appropriateness of application. Project Requirements Your project should include at least one example of each of the following things: 1. A downloaded dataset. This means a dataset derived from some online source such as the Maine Office of GIS, the USGS, NASA, or NOAA. 2. A dataset made from scratch. This means a dataset that you have digitized, surveyed, or otherwise created. 3. A joined table. This means a dataset that includes new data fields attached to an existing spatialized dataset. 4. A raster dataset. This means a dataset either downloaded or created that is in raster form. Examples include DEMs, cost surfaces, viewsheds, and binary surfaces. 5. A vector dataset. This means a dataset either downloaded or created that is in vector form. Examples include points, lines, and areas. 6. A qualitative dataset. This means a dataset that is in some way non-numerical. There are many different kinds of non-numerical datasets. Examples include property records, names, and many classification schemes, such as rock type, ecoregion, and political units. 7. A quantitative dataset. This means a dataset that is in some way measured or calculated. Examples include temperature, altitude, and rate of change. 8. An interpolated or calculated dataset. This means a dataset that has been derived by transforming an existing dataset. Feel free to use the table below to track your completion of the requirements. Materials to be Submitted 1. 10 minute software-driven project presentation at the end of the semester. 2. Portfolio explaining the presentation in full. 3. A fully functioning APRX file driving a working copy of the data structure, that allows a reviewer to explore the data and the analysis. Data Set 1. Downloaded dataset. 2. Dataset made from scratch. 3. Joined table. 4. Raster dataset. 5. Vector dataset. 6. Qualitative dataset. 7. Quantitative dataset. 8. Interpolated or calculated dataset. Name Description
