JERSEY/n STATE SURVEYING STANDARDS

Your goal is to become licensed to practice the surveying profession in a particular state.

Licensing requires that the state specific exam that applicants will have to take will test

applicants on applicable state law. State law includes the standards of practice mandated in the

state.

1. You are to obtain a copy of 1) the standards for performing a surveying services in the state

and 2) any ethical standards that apply. (If your state of interest does not have standards,

you are to find a state that does and use them.)

2. Studying for an exam often requires a person visualize what questions could be asked in an

exam. You are to prepare twenty multiple choice, true/false, and multiple answer

questions. There can not be less than five questions for any one format of question (i.e.,

A Study of Licensing Requirements in a State

Your employer has asked you to consider obtaining professional licensure as a land surveyor

and also as a professional engineer in a state of your choice. You are to look up any applicable

state statutes and report in a memo the answers to the following questions:

1. What state would you pursue licensing (it can be different for the surveying and

engineering)?

2. What is the state agency that handles licensing in the state you will pursue licensing?

3. What is the agency's contact information?

4. What are the costs for testing and licensing?

5. What are the continuing education requirements for license renewal?

6. What degree is required for licensing?

7. Would the SVT degree, that is ETAC/ABET accredited, be acceptable for engineering

licensure?

10. What tests are required?

11. When can the tests be taken?

12. Does an applicant have to have the degree or experience before the test can be taken?

A facsimile of an engineer's seal and of a surveyor's seal for the state of interest must be

provided as part of the assignment. A facsimile of the seal can be obtained from the

internet.
