For this paper, you will write an analysis in which you compare and contrast Death from The

Seventh Seal with another death personification of your choice. This personification could be

from film, TV, comics/graphic novels, a painting, or another visual medium. Your thesis should

state how Death from The Seventh Seal and your chosen personification are similar as well as

how they differ, and why it matters. What does this analysis tell us about how or why people

personify death?

Your paper should include the following components:

o

An introduction with background/context and your thesis statement.

o

A one-paragraph discussion of why people personify things in general, and death in

particular. In this paragraph, you will refer to and cite at least one of the four scholarly

articles we read in class.

o

Your body paragraphs, in which you develop your argument and support your thesis.

o A conclusion.

Your evidence for this paper should take the form of quotes, descriptions, and/or actions from

the visual medium itself. This means you will need to watch the film/episode, read the graphic

novel, etc. Please plan accordingly and allow yourself sufficient time for this. Do not rely on

secondary sources.

Essays should be 4-5 typed, double-spaced pages in 12-point Times New Roman font, with 1-

inch margins on all sides. Give your paper a descriptive title. Include appropriate in-text

citations for anything you quote or paraphrase. Also include a Works Cited page at the end (this

does not count as one of the 4-5 pages).
