Question

For your Finalized Assignment 2, you will write the body of a 500- to 700-word meeting news story based on the same government meeting video that you used for Assignment 1, the news lead, from the list of meeting videos posted in the Course Resources.* * (n.b. You must use the same video that you used for Assignment 1 unless you asked your instructor for permission to select and use a different video from among the assigned videos for this course's final projects, or you have your instructor's approval to attend and write about a public community government meeting that you attended in person. Once your instructor has graded this assignment, you may not change to a different meeting video or a different in-person meeting. Do not try to write a meeting story using some other meeting video that you found. And do not try to complete the meeting story assignment by attending a meeting without the prior approval of your instructor.) Objective: To evaluate the newsworthiness of information and events and create a basic news story whose information is organized in inverted pyramid order. The assignment assumes you are a reporter for a daily newspaper that circulates in the community served by the government organization in the video you selected. Your job is to apply critical thinking to assembling newsworthy information from that meeting into an inverted pyramid for a summary news story that will be published online and in print after midnight on the evening that the meeting was held. Before tackling this assignment, make sure you have read "Meeting Stories" chapter in the JOUR 201 Manual posted in the Course Resources, as well as the Step-by-Step: How To Cover Meetings and the Sample Meeting Story handouts there. Your assignment also needs to follow the journalistic conventions we've been discussing and to contain correct grammar, punctuation, and AP style. For complete instructions on this assignment, see the assignment instructions in the Course Resources. Consult this assignment's grading rubric for further best practice guidance. And don't forget you could be developing and using your own error log (optional) to help you overcome common writing errors!
