Communicate Interpret Frame Analyze Extract Wrangle/ Prepare Scenario Kickstarter, the crowdfunding platform, is thinking about providing a consulting service to project founders to help its customers create more successful crowdfunding campaigns. You've been asked to do some initial analysis and create a presentation that makes clear recommendations on how people can create a successful Kickstarter campaign. Deliverables and Timing Submit an Excel workbook (*.xlsx) including the following worksheets (download the template here): Part 1: Data Cleaning GA Kickstarter Lab KICKSTARTER 1. Sheet 1: “Data Handling Summary,” which explains how you cleaned the data and why (e.g. reformatted columns, dropped current columns, added new columns, etc.). 2. Sheet 2: “Data Dictionary” with the name, description, and data type for each column. 3. Sheet 3: Clean data Part 2: Quantitative Data Analysis 4. Use the Analysis & Charts sheet to summarize relevant numbers for various data points and interpret the reasons for these numbers for your audience. Add more sheets if necessary. 5. Create visualizations using the best chart format to highlight insights. 6. Use the results from your analysis for Part 3 below. 7. f you could collect additional data on other attributes of these projects, what would they be and why? Part 3: Qualitative Analysis Create a presentation using Google Slides or PowerPoint (maximum of 5 slides excluding Title and end slides) that make clear recommendations on how people can create a successful Kickstarter campaign. Be sure to consider the following: ○ What's the best length of time to run a campaign? ○ What's the ideal pledge goal? ○ What type of projects would be most successful at getting funded? ○ Is there an ideal month/day/time to launch a campaign? You are free to go in any direction you would like with it, but if you get stuck for ideas have a look at the Tips section below for some inspiration. Data You can get the data here. Tips · Start with loading the data into Excel and getting familiar with what you have (and what you don't have). · Clean the data where you need to. Be sure to spend at least 90 minutes pulling your story together from the graphics and insights that you produce. Here are a few pointers to help guide you: Part 1: Data Cleaning 1. This can include: a. Extracting data from columns to make additional columns. b. Formatting cells so they are numbers or currencies or dates. 2. Clean the data as appropriate by removing duplicates, addressing nulls, and reformatting data types (e.g. string to date). 3. Add new columns for categorical or numerical data as appropriate, using your other features, recording any new columns in your Data Dictionary sheet. 4. Describe the steps you took to wrangle the data in a handling summary in the Data Wrangling Summary sheet of the workbook. 5. Make sure your clean data is in the Clean Data tab of the workbook. Part 2: Quantitative Data Analysis 6. Exploratory data analysis: Use these questions to get to know your data. Record your answers in the Analysis & Charts sheet of the workbook: a. What's the count of projects (rows) and features (columns)? b. What is the mean (total) pledge that projects get? (Not per backer.) c. Create a histogram that shows the distribution for the number of backers. What does it tell you? d. What is the success rate of projects? GA Kickstarter Lab KICKSTARTER e. Are some types of projects more likely to succeed than others? f. Does the success rate differ across US states? g. What are the differences between projects that succeed and ones that fail? 7. Create visualizations using the best chart format to highlight insights. 8. Answer the main challenge: what actions can someone who is about to start a Kickstarter campaign take as a result of your analysis and charts? Part 3: Qualitative Analysis 9. Use the results from your analysis to compile a business recommendation. 10. Look back at the Technical Presentations session to get a structure for creating your presentation. - 11. Remember to include only analysis that helps tell your story — you will have lots of interesting insights that may not be relevant to your story, but you have limited space. Only include the ones that are most powerful for supporting the points you want to make. Rubric Instructors will evaluate student skill based on the following rubric: Incomplete Data Cleaning Data not cleaned. Doesn't Meet Expectations Data is partially cleaned. Data Cleaning (Explanation) Data Cleaning (Data Dictionary) No explanation given how data has been cleaned Data dictionary not completed Explanation given of how data has been cleaned, but is incomplete Data dictionary completed based on Meets Expectations Data is well cleaned and formatted, addressing duplicates, nulls and data types, adding conditional formatting. Clear and thorough explanation of how the data has been cleaned is given, including reasons the data has been addressed in this way, and any additional columns. Additional columns have been added appropriately, GA Kickstarter Lab KICKSTARTER Quantitative Analysis (Exploratory Data Analysis) No analysis of how people can create a successful Kickstarter campaign. Qualitative No story created in Google Slides or PowerPoint Analysis (Storytelling) original data extracted Limited or un-focused analysis of how people can create a successful Kickstarter campaign. Story created but is very long (more than 10 slides) and/or the story being told does not make sense and the learner explains these in detail and includes these additional columns in the data dictionary.
