GRAND CANYON UNIVERSITY™ MHW-513: Grief and Loss Case Scenarios Instructions: Select one of the following case scenarios to apply to the Grief and Loss Intervention Proposal assignment. Scenario A Emily
was devastated when her grandmother, her closest confidante and source of support, passed away suddenly from a heart condition. As a 4th grader, this event was her first experience with loss of a family member. Growing up, her grandmother would often watch Emily while her parents were working. They shared countless stories, played games together, and she had a knack for making her feel cherished. With this sudden loss, Emily found herself grappling with a complex mix of emotions - sadness, confusion, and even anger. For weeks following her grandmother's death, Emily was spending more time alone in her room and less with her parents. The loss affected her in other ways as well. She withdrew from her friends and struggled to focus on her studies. Emily's elementary school teacher also notified her parents of Emily's changes at school. Emily would often stay in the classroom for lunch instead of being with her peers. More recently, Emily started asking questions regarding the mortality of her Mom and Dad. Emily's parents were deeply concerned for their daughter, while dealing with their own grief. Scenario B Mark, a 42-yr old man recently experienced the traumatic loss of his wife following a car accident. Mark was driving the car, and while not at fault, this accident has had a profound and lasting impact. Following the accident, Mark has been struggling with intense grief survivor's guilt, and what his friends and family feel is posttraumatic stress disorder. He experiences vivid flashbacks of the accident, nightmares, and overwhelming anxiety. These symptoms have severely affected his ability to function in daily life both in relationships and have caused practical implications. © 2024. Grand Canyon University. All Rights Reserved. He is becoming distant from his friends and family, finding it difficult to connect with others or express his emotions. The loss has created a sense of isolation and loneliness, as he feels that no one understands the depths of his pain. In addition to the emotional toll, the traumatic loss has caused financial implications on Mark's life. He has been unable to return to work due to the overwhelming grief and trauma. Financial difficulties have added to his stress, as he struggles to meet his needs and support himself. Mark wants to move forward and is open to receiving support but does not know where to begin. Scenario C Lily Chan is a 65-year-old Cambodian widow. She has a history of physical ailments that cannot be explained by any medical reason. Mrs. Chan says she has had these for many years, but they are getting worse since her husband passed away a year ago and her son moved to another state about 6 months ago. She has also begun to have vivid nightmares of things that happened during the war when she was a child including being separated from her mother when she left Cambodia. These are all impacting her normal daily living patterns that she and her husband were accustomed to. She also does not know what to do with her time now that her husband and son are no longer present. Mrs. Chan also indicated that her son wanted her to move with him so that she would not be lonely, but she did not want to leave the home that she and her husband worked so hard for after becoming citizens in the United States./n Status Active Assessment Traits Requires Lopeswrite Assessment Description The purpose of this assignment is to assess how to help someone through a loss.
