Question Homework: Power BI Getting Started
Summary: Complete the "Get Started with Power BI" tutorial, with some specified customizations and additions.
PDF of tutorial. Page numbers referenced below correspond to pages in the PDF version of the tutorial. The
web site of the tutorial with some live links is at this link, but it gets changed periodically and will not be
exactly the same as the PDF; please rely on the PDF.
Tasks
1. Work through the tutorial as presented in the PDF file, with the changes/additions noted below. Be sure to save
your file as a PBIX file.

●
IMPORTANT! On pages 4-6 (“Connect to Data" section) of the tutorial, the instructions state to go to a page
at bankrate.com. Unfortunately, the page structure of that web page has changed since the tutorial was last
updated by Microsoft. Instead, use this CSV file as the starting point for the tutorial. Resume the tutorial in
the Transform Data stage.
Note: When you create the map, you might be prompted to enable maps (security setting; it is safe to
enable this).
Include a title on your dashboard (page), "Top 10 Weather States."
Add tooltips to the data markers on the map. Include the following in the tooltips: Weather Rank,
Affordability Rank, Overall Rank, Overall Score
Include your contact information as a clickable email address in the upper right corner of the page. If your
name is not obvious from the email address, include your name as well as your email address.
An image of the completed sheet for this step is shown below (note: the actual data for this example
changes periodically, so use this sheet as a guide only, specific data and states may be somewhat different).
2. Read about the methodology for the rankings on the bankrate.com web site. Note the data on the web site isn't
exactly the same as the data you have analyzed, but the methodology from year to year is fairly similar.
a. Make a page in your PBIX file named “Commentary” and create a text box.
b. Summarize and critique the overall methodology for the rankings. Include in is this a brief discussion of
whether you think additional or other data should be factored into the rankings. Also discuss the level
of analysis (i.e., state), versus county or city/town.
Also, in the process of transforming the data and building the dashboard, you may discover apparent
anomalies or oddities in the data. Anomalies can be missing data, but can also be values you are
surprised by based on your domain knowledge (use critical thinking). You don't need to try to correct
potential errors. Provide a short description of the anomaly. Identify a couple of possible causes of this
anomaly (think about the methodology when you are doing this).
C.
3. As mentioned on page 26 of the PDF, you can duplicate a page of a PBI file. After getting your "Top 10 Weather
States" page done, duplicate it, and modify the copy so that it represents either the top 10 affordable states or
the top overall states by rank (choose one to complete). Make the necessary changes to the visualization
settings: titles, fields, filters, anything that that needs to change to make it correct for the viewpoint of the data.
(The take-away here should be that spending time designing the basic format and user interface of one sheet
can be used for all your sheets. Making changes to existing settings and visuals is usually easier than re-
creating everything to match your initial sheet.)
4. Create at least one more page in the file, with at least three visualizations. At least one must be a scatterplot,
one a filled map, and you can choose the type for the third. For this page, utilize the 40 states as you filtered out
the bottom 10 weather states in the tutorial (in practice, we would not normally filter out states using Query
Editor, but instead filter them out on a page or individual visualization). Your visualizations should be
professional quality (you could include them in a professional business presentation or report). Be mindful
when creating the scatterplot of how PBI chooses to summarize the data, and make changes to make the
scatterplot as useful as possible.
5. Save your file as a PBIX file, e.g., HWxx_Grinde_Roger.pbix. The submitted PBIX file should have three pages of
visualizations (from #1, #3, and #4 above), and one Commentary page (#2 above)
Submit PBIX file using the naming convention HWxx_lastname_firstname.pbix.
