How much does race determine the economic life outcomes of Black women and girls (and how do we know)?

When they reach adulthood, black and white women who grew up in families with similar means make more or less the same money. According to earlier studies, black women may put in more hours at work than white women to make up for the fact that they are more likely to be the only breadwinners in the family. Contrary to popular belief, the statistics showed that white and black women in this age bracket from similar backgrounds worked approximately the same number of hours per week and earned roughly the same per-hour wages. They both worked in related fields. Black and white women who begin their careers at the same level make comparable salaries as individuals. In contrast to black women, white women are substantially more likely to marry, which increases the likelihood that they will have a second source of income at home. As a result, white women have, on average, larger household incomes. Black and Hispanic Americans grow up with lower payments than white children raised at the same socioeconomic level. However, if mobility remains the same, Hispanics will be on course to close that disparity in a few generations, whereas Blacks will not. (The data included legal immigrants and Americans born in the country.) Another way to interpret these statistics is that white men earn more than everyone else. They make more money than white women and black men combined. Both race and gender are factors in inequality, and white men have advantages in both categories.
