Introduction Factorial design helps to investigate the effects of input variables (factors) on an output variable (response) at the same time. In recent lectures, students have been given examples of factorial designs. These experiments consist of a series of runs, or tests, in which purposeful changes are made to the input variables. In this lab, we will design and analyze an example in Minitab, and then you will follow the example to do your own analysis based on a selected dataset. 2. Objectives • Learn the design of experiments and data analysis • Learn how to create a factorial design in Minitab Learn the definition and usage of the main effects plot, interaction plot, and Pareto plot of factor effects • Use a stored model to create factorial plots and predict a response 3. Methods 3.1 Factorial Plots: Download the Lab 2.ppsx file and review the three types of factorial plots: main effect, interaction and pareto chart./nAnswer the following questions: Question 1: What are the factors and the dependent variables in this factorial design? How many levels for each factor? What is the number of replicates? How many runs will there be in this design? 3.3 Data Analysis via Minitab: Go through Steps 6-10 on the Lab 2.ppsx. Save the project, and answer the following questions: Question 2: Give the regression equation for the output variable HOURS. Among the factors, which one has the positive impact on the dependent variable, and which one has the negative impact on the dependent variables?/nGive the regression equation for the output variable HOURS. Among the factors, which one has the positive impact on the dependent variable, and which one has the negative impact on the dependent variables? Question 3: Plot all three effect plots. Question 4: Based on the knowledge learned about three factorial plots (main effects plot, interaction plot, and Pareto chart), explain three effect plots for HOURS. From your Pareto chart, list the significant terms, and explain why are they significant? 3.4 Analysis of your own dataset You should use one of the sample datasets provided in the .ppsx or other public datasets, and read through their dataset information, abstract, and other relevant information. Once you figure out the dependent variables and select at least two independent variables, repeat the experimental procedure from Steps 6-10. *Note: Minitab can import .csv files. It depends on which dataset you are using. If you are using the .txt or .data file, please first rename the extension as "csv". Click File >> Open → Worksheet → Local file and click your dataset. Answer the following questions: Question 5: What are your independent variables and your dependent variable(s)./nQuestion 7: Generate and plot your main effect plot. (If your dataset isn't fit for the factorial analysis, you can go to Stat → ANOVA -> Main Effects Plot & Interaction Plot to generate your results, and Stat →> Regression -> Regression -> Fit Regression Model to generate your equation.) Question 8: What does the dashed line mean in the main effect plots? Question 9: Generate and plot your interaction plot. Question 10: What does each point mean in the interaction plot? Question 11: Find the 95% confidence interval for one of your experiment settings.
