MGMT2718 ASSESSMENT: ARTICLE REVIEW 1
•
Please download (via the UNSW library catalogue) and read the following article:
Collins, C. J. (2007). The interactive effects of recruitment practices and product awareness on job seekers'
employer knowledge and application behaviors. Journal of Applied Psychology, 92(1), 180-190.
(Note: Please double check to make sure you have downloaded the correct article, as this author has multiple
articles on similar topics).
Once you have read the article, please write a review which is structured around the following questions (the
percentages in brackets indicate the approximate weighting given to each question):
1. Provide a summary of the purpose, methods and findings of the study (25%). Your summary should cover
the following points:
2.
3.
A. Briefly (in no more than 2-3 sentences) describe the main issue that the study investigated
B.
C.
Describe the methodology used by the researchers to conduct the study
Provide a summary of the key findings of the research in relation to the main issue that was
investigated. [HINT: You do not need to focus on the statistics or the technical terms. Instead try
to demonstrate your conceptual understanding of the findings using your own words].
Evaluate the study in terms of its internal validity and external validity. (50%)
Read the scenario "Recruitment at Antoco" which appears on the next page. Based on the evidence found
in the Collins (2007) study, evaluate the advice given by each of the five HR managers at the end of the
scenario (i.e., is it good or bad advice? Why or why not? Are the claims supported by the findings of the
article?). Make sure to explicitly link your arguments to the findings of the Collins (2007) article. (25%)
The review should be a maximum of 4 double-spaced A4 pages long (Times New Roman, 12-point font with
2.5cm margins). Please stick to the page limit as it will be strictly enforced.
In completing the assignment you do not need to refer to any other research papers, other than the Collins
(2007) article cited above.
Article Review 1 will comprise 20% of your overall mark for the course (i.e., 20 of the 100 marks). You will be
marked based on how precisely, accurately and comprehensively you respond to each section and how clearly
you communicate your responses. Sections 1, 2 and 3 are weighted approximately 25%, 50% and 25%
respectively.
Note that it is important that you answer the questions in your own words rather than using phrases from the
article. DO NOT JUST COPY WHOLE SENTENCES WHILE CHANGING A SMALL NUMBER OF WORDS. Also note
that this is not a group activity, so you should complete your reviews individually.
It is prohibited to use generative Al (e.g., ChatGPT) to search for or generate information or answers or to write
or edit your work. If its use is detected, it will be regarded as serious academic misconduct and subject to the
standard penalties, which may include 00FL, suspension and exclusion. Please make sure to retain electronic
copies of your draft work.
softcopy via turnitin by that day in order to avoid late penalties (see course outline). Important information
about using turnitin appears below, following the case study. Scenario: Recruitment at Antoco
Antoco is a U.S. based company that seeks to recruit up to 20 people each year to be part of
their graduate recruitment program. The company has decided that it will do this by
participating in on-campus recruitment at local universities with the aim of targeting graduating
job seekers. As they want to recruit a relatively large number of people, it is important that their
recruitment efforts yield a large applicant pool so that most if not all positions can be filled.
Recruiting an adequate number of graduates is considered very important at Antoco and
consequently the company is willing to invest money in activities that are likely to improve
recruitment outcomes. However, they also want to avoid devoting resources to activities that do
not have a clear benefit. To date, the company has not invested in any recruitment practices or
strategies aimed at targeting graduating students. Furthermore, as the company does not
conduct advertising of its products, most students and recent graduates have little if any
familiarity with its products. The company seeks advice and suggestions from five of its HR
managers in relation to what actions can be used to attract suitable applicants as part of its
graduate recruitment efforts. The five HR managers provide the following opinions:
1. HR Manager 1 suggests increasing the pool of applicants by providing potential
applicants with more information about the desirable attributes of the jobs at Antoco
(such as above-average pay and opportunities for advancement) through greater
employee endorsement activities.
2. HR Manager 2 suggests spending money on general recruitment ads (such as
recruitment posters) in order to increase potential applicants' familiarity with the
company, as this will then lead to a greater number of actual applicants.
3. HR Manager 3 agrees with HR Manager 2 about the benefits of increasing potential
applicants' familiarity with the company, but believes that this is more effectively
achieved by increasing the company's product awareness AND spending more money on
general recruitment ads.
4. HR Manager 4 believes that Antoco should invest in both general recruitment ads and
employee endorsements, as together these will increase the familiarity and reputation
of the company among potential applicants.
5. HR Manager 5 argues that the company should focus on targeting potential applicants
with high grade point averages (GPAs) as part of its recruitment efforts, as such people
are more likely to apply for jobs. Turnitin Submission Instructions
There are a few important things to remember about Turnitin:
. Turnitin is used to detect plagiarism. The software compares your assignment against published
material and other submitted work (e.g., other students' assignments) to identify overlap.
•
•
After uploading, you should check the originality report. If there is more than 20-25% overlap
between your final submitted assignment and other material as determined by Turnitin then I may
be asking you to explain why this is the case. As such, if you have excessive overlap you should
correct this on your original copy and upload again. Turnitin only allows you to check the originality
report once every 24 hours, so it's a good idea to upload your assignment early so as to have
adequate time to address any issues well before the due date.
Note that your assignment will remain in the Turnitin database for an unknown period, during which
time it may be used to determine whether other individuals have engaged in academic misconduct.
Turnitin stores the document both in its original form and in an "electronic fingerprint" form. The
original form of the document is only available to the original author and the lecturer of the course
to which the document was submitted. Neither UNSW nor Turnitin administration staff are able to
view assignments submitted through Turnitin. If another document is subsequently submitted to
Turnitin and matches text in your paper, the lecturer responsible for the new document will only be
provided with the following information: (a) the name of the institution from which the matching
assignment originated, (b) the name of the course to which the matching assignment was submitted,
(c) the name and email address of the lecturer responsible for that course, (d) the file name of the
matching assignment, and (e) the date the matching assignment was submitted.
