Introduction This fieldtrip is to visit a local manufacturing company (Primoplastics, https://www.primoplastics.com.au/), which is to offer the students of MECH3005 opportunity to visualise the polymer manufacturing processes that are covered in the lectures. At the conclusion of the tour, students are expected to have better understanding of key aspects of how a manufacturing process is conducted on day-to-day basis. When having direct exposure to a more practical view of some of the theory discussed in a class room environment, the learning outcomes can be much more significant. Students may also be able to identify their future careers and prepare themselves accordingly. The aims of this fieldtrip include: • • To have a practical exposure to the industry. To develop understanding of the different processes involved in the polymer manufacturing To know the skills and challenges associated with the polymer manufacturing To explore the equipment used in polymer manufacturing To explore the safety measures taken by the industries • • To understand the present demand of the industries . To learn how quality of the products are measured and monitored The field trip comprises visiting “PrimoPlastics” which is a plastic manufacturing company. The visit is scheduled in Week 7 Please check iLearn for the exact date Before the visit, please: • • • • Review the subject material. Since the site is a polymer manufacturing company, the Week 7 lecture will be helpful for understanding some of the processes. Watch some relevant videos (blow moulding): Blow moulding: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8W6P5KU5ONQ Injection moulding: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RMjtmsr3CqA&t=67s Injection moulding: Mold design & Marking: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MhoAIDz4Bhw Do some preliminary research about the site. Make a list of information that you believe need to collect at the side. Prepare some questions that you would like to ask during the visit. Complete any forms or health and safety requirements (Field Friendly). • Know how to get to the company. • Know safety requirement (e.g., enclosed shoes, safety vest, ear plugs) 1 On the site, students are encouraged to take notes (due to the safety issue, the company suggest 1-3 representatives per group taking notes), write down the process details, take photos, and have a dialogue with the company's engineer. While collecting this information, students are advised to reflect on the objectives of the field trip to ensure they are met during the trip. Agenda: (Please check iLearn for any updates) Group 1 (Max. 20 people) Group 2 (Max. 20 people) Arriving 10:25am Arriving 11:25am Briefing (Engineer) 10:30-10:40am Briefing (Engineer) 11:30-11:40am Visiting the 10:40-11:20am Visiting the 11:40-12:20pm manufacturing site manufacturing site Heading back to 11:30am Heading back to 12:30pm campus campus 2. Fieldtrip Report Guidelines Your report should be minimum 6 pages in length and cover the following aspects: Abstract A short version of the whole report, which typically includes a few sentences introducing the background, location of the site visited, the purpose of the report, brief statement about what was observed, and conclusions. Introduction ܀ • • . Location and a brief history of the company A summary of production, including commodity produced, tonnes produced. What are the company's typical customers (market) Main body of the report • Production process: operations for producing some representative products, including raw materials, equipment, manufacturing procedure, quality assurance, saleable products. • Key observation and discussion: ✓ Discussion on the key challenges, design consideration, reflecting on the topics covered in the class. ✓ Discussion on the different blow moulding processes and processes that the company uses. Include details such as their differences, what plastics can be processed, what products (structures) can be produced, etc. ✓ Describe what you learned and how it relates to the subject matter discussed in the lectures. ✓ Discuss the latest developments in the relevant manufacturing techniques (may require research). ❖ Conclusion (including recommendations/suggestions to improve the field trip in the future) Acknowledgment ܀ ❖ References 2 3. Expectation and Marking Rubric for the Fieldtrip Report Students shall collect the necessary information and prepare a detailed report for evaluation. It is expected that students do some online search. The report shall be neatly typed. Sketches, photos may be included in the report. Discuss your favorite parts of the trip and the report should read like a personal observation report, including a compelling introduction, a well- structured body and a strong conclusion. The report is evaluated based on the following criteria: Component Abstract Introduction Information quality; Discussion and understanding of production process; Relevance to contents covered in lecture Structure and Presentation Expectation Succinctness, clarity, appropriate referencing Succinctness, clarity, contains sufficient details that can be easily followed by readers. Reports should: ✓ ✓ ✓ Establish links between theory you have learned in the classroom and the practices you observed at the site.
