Question
Instructions:
The story of human's historical evolutionary
relationship with the environment is more
accurately speaking, one of their relationship with
the aspects of their perceived environments. The
nervous system of humans has evolved to receive
only a small part of the stimuli that exist in the real
world. Some of the concepts that help us to better
understand this phenomenon are the concepts of
habituation and of Gestalt Laws. Furthermore, we
now know that culture itself also evolves into
discreet cultural "paths" which shape the
characteristic types of relationships humans have
with the environment. These evolutionary changes
are not random, nor can they be explained by
principles of biological evolution alone. Rather, to
better understand the process of cultural evolution,
it would be more helpful to understand how the
process of "conscious evolution" and micro and
macro factors influence the evolutionary paths of
culture. For these reasons, the Head of the EVR
4415 Clan Council has asked all Primordial culture. For these reasons, the Head of the EVR
4415 Clan Council has asked all Primordial
Ancestors to work on essays that elaborate on
these concepts and processes and provide
examples and evidence of how they exist in real life.
Failure to post the assignment by the due date will
result in the deduction of 5% of the grade for every
day the assignment is late. Submitting the
assignment more than 5 days late will result in zero

1. Sustainability based on Whose
Perceptions of Reality?
The authors of the textbook state that there
isn't a one-to-one correspondence between
what's "out there" (a single true "reality") and
what we perceive. They also add that because
human perceptions are the result of the
interaction between the external world and
the evolved characteristics of the human
nervous system, we miss much about this
"reality" that is detectable by other
organisms. If indeed, this is true, then what
are the potential implications to other
organisms of efforts to increase the planet's
ability to sustain a good quality of life for all
living beings based on a human perception of
reality? How are some people trying to
address this by trying to better understand
how other species perceive the world? Do
you think we should design sustainability
plans that also take in consideration the how other species perceive the world? Do
you think we should design sustainability
plans that also take in consideration the
perceptions of other species? Why or why
not?
2. How does Solipsism affect
Environmental Worldviews?
Explain the concept of solipsism. Provide
examples of how scientific, religious, and
other human beings have attempted to
answer a conundrum of solipsism - "How do
we know that the others we perceive - indeed
the world we perceive - are actually out
there?". How does the way we answer these
questions affect the types of environmental
worldviews we develop, our attitudes
towards the rest of nature, and what we
consider to be appropriate behaviors to live in
such a world?
