Write an argumentative research-based historical critical essay exploring key issues, topics, and trends in this course using a single film, and publish your essay to the course blog to earn points towards a portion of your course grade. Submit the url for your essay here. Choose the film from those recommended or another that fits the week's topic: the course blog will have essays on these films, and you can see what resources prior students in the course used. Identify and enter into critical debates and discussions with scholars and journalists, and provide your own perspective. Respond to those debates by considering an historical issue that can be resolved by examining primary historical evidence and ‘textual evidence'--details from the movie itself. Basically, have two pieces of each type of evidence for each film you write about. Your essay should be at least 1,000 words and no more than 1,250 words, and It should be writerly, reflective, scholarly, and historical. E.g., avoid long, awkward URL's, make titles and captions clear and specific, etc. Use the WordPress category "short essay." End your essay with a list of sources in whatever format you like. Enter into conversations with other scholars and treat their ideas fairly while adding something new. Use primary historical resources to develop your own historical argument or idea. Explore Big Course Questions Is it conventional or unconventional? Does it represent a common scenario, or something different? With predictable results, or something offbeat? E.g., the film was artistically conventional and expensive--AND it made back its budget, as you'd expect. Or the same film did not--so why not? Put differently, consider comparing and contrasting the differences between what the makers of the film expected to happen vs. what actually did happen. E.g., the filmmakers followed a conventional formula and spent a lot of money, but for some reason the film was a flop. Why? Or, the film had a modest budget, no stars, and a scandalous topic, and yet it was widely embraced by critics and the public. Why? Try analyzing and relating the different dimensions of film. Pick on one or more key dimensions of the film: economic, aesthetic or cultural, social or political, technological. E.g., Was the film expensive to make? Did it earn back its budget? What was notable about the film's style? Is it conventional or artistically experimental? Does the film engage with social or political issues? If so, how does the film manage this without alienating its potential audience? Or is it not concerned about that? Was the film striking or unique in its use of film technology? Consider also relating the film to globalization: the global flows of commodities, people, and styles across national and other boundaries. One way to consider films as global culture is to think of how they reflect National cultures: National Cultures--and Our Class Situate the film in critical debates. What do critics and scholars argue about the film? What do you have to add to the conversation? Or how would you like to change it? Situate the film historically. Connect the film you're writing about to cycles and trends identified in the course reading. Consider situating the film by describing movies it is similar to and different from, that came out before the movie, at the same time as it, and since then. You may also situate the film by placing it in relation to other historical events that might be relevant (e.g., Vietnam, Watergate). Analyze primary historical documents to show how they help us to understand the past. Use the film itself to resolve these issues. How does the look and feel of the movie help to resolve the debates around the film? How can you interpret these details of the film in relation to the historical evidence you have? Use details such as the plot, scenes, shots, details of camera positioning, acting--anything you can see and describe. Number and Types of Resources Your finished essay should use at AT LEAST TWO of each of the following resources for each film you analyze. critical resources (one journalistic and one scholarly); primary historical resources (one of which must be visual); pieces of textual evidence: e.g., still frames, video clips, descriptions of the plot or of scenes or other audiovisual details.
