LABORATORY EXPERIMENT 1: INTRODUCTION TO MATLAB Objectives: After successfully completing this laboratory experiment, students will be able to do the following: • Open MATLAB Create a row vector to represent time Understand the usage of the semicolon (;) • Use an index to select specific values contained in an array Use the plot function Use MATLAB to generate exponential curves, sinusoidal curves, and exponentially decaying sinusoidal curves 1.1 What is MATLAB and why do we use it in MET? The name "MATLAB" is short for MATrix LABoratory. Note that there is no "H" in the name MATLAB. A matrix is an array of elements. The plural of "matrix” is “matrices." Some examples of matrices are shown here: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 0.1 -0.2 -0.3 0.4 [0 0.5 1 1.5 2] 3 12 19 70 The second matrix has the same number of rows as columns and is called a "square matrix." The third, with just one row, is called a "row vector," and the fourth, with just one column, is called a "column vector." 1 Signals can be represented as matrices and the mathematics needed to process them can be performed efficiently through the use of matrix algebra. MATLAB is the perfect tool for matrix algebra, which is why it has been chosen by many universities and engineering firms and is why we are using it in this class. 1.2 Getting Started Start MATLAB by selecting it from the Start menu on your computer. Once MATLAB opens, you will see three windows: Workspace in the upper left, Command History in the lower left, and Command Window on the right, as shown in Figure 1.1. Click in the command window. All commands that you enter in this lab will be entered in this window. MATLAB JOX 7X QUSFONE 11:56 AM Command Window 1.3 Representation of Time and Usage of the Semicolon (;) All of the signals that you will learn functions of time. Time is continuous. That means that any amount of time contains an infinite number of points. Of course, this is impossible to represent on a computer. MATLAB can approximate continuous time with a sequence of regularly spaced numbers. One way to do this is by typing the following: linspace (0, 1, 11) MATLAB Prompt NOTE: If you make a mistake and would like to re-initialize t1, you have two options. You can type "clear t1" to erase it OR just type the correct line, which will overwrite what you typed incorrectly before. The name "linspace” means that you are creating an array with equal, or linear, spacing. The word "linspace" is a function, the numbers 0, 1, and 11 are the arguments to that function, and t1 is the returned value. The variable t1 is now a row vector with the values that you see in the Command Window, as shown in Figure 1.2. It may look like t1 has more than one row, but this is only because the window is not wide enough. MATLAB warns you of this by listing the column number range for each line. Another way to determine the size of your matrix is to look in the Workspace window. There you will find your newly created t1, with its size: 1X11. 4 Figure 1.2.
