Before you post to the discussion forum, complete the following activity: • Find a friend with whom you disagree on some contemporary controversial topic. Have a conversation with that person (no more than 10 minutes) and try to convince each other that you are each right. Spend a few minutes talking with your friend to ensure that you have repaired your friendship if it got damaged in the conversation. Then, make a few notes together about the following questions: o What methodology did you use? o What did you agree on? o In your conversation were there reasons underlying the point you were trying to argue? o What were they? o Did anyone have a reason that seemed to trump everything? o What was it and how did it become the trump card? • Next, redo the conversation speaking only of your own experience with the issue. One way to do this is to take turns saying "I remember when..." and then describe some experience, being sure to focus only on description and not interpretation. If this "I remember when" approach doesn't work or is too difficult to do, then have a more naturally structured conversation, being sure to remain focused on describing your experience with the issue, with as little interpretation of the experience as possible. Carry on doing this for as long as you can but no more than 10 minutes. Make a few notes together about the following: o How was the experience of this conversation different? o What was the outcome? o What did you agree on? o Why was the outcome different, assuming it was? Post your responses to the questions in both sections above in the discussion forum and respond to the initial posts of at least two other people.
