Design of Thermal Systems (MECH-0009.1) — Spring-2024 - CW (Design Project) - R - QP
Module Code: MECH 0009.1
Module Name: Design of Thermal Systems
Level: 2
Max. Marks: 100
Instructions to Student
•

•
Present the relevant references/citation at the end of the document.
The project work has to be done in a group, and the number of group members should be
between 3 and 5.
You can refer books in the Library or use internet resources. But you should not cut and
paste material from the sources you have referred.
For individual assessment, each group member will present the group work and his/her
contribution to the project work.
The write-up of the report should follow the format and contents given in this guide.
Feedback will be given in every week class sessions as required in addition to the feedback
which will be given in MEC Learn for the submissions.
• The marks received on the assignment will be scaled down to the actual weightage of 50%.
Feedback after the final evaluation will be provided by in two weeks of the submission date.
Module Learning Outcomes
The following LOs are achieved by the student by completing the assignment successfully
1. Apply a logical design methodology to the solution of a thermal systems design problem and
apply cost estimation techniques.
2. Use an understanding of psychometrics and its application in HVAC engineering and design to
practice or observe psychrometric measurements
3. Apply understanding of thermodynamics and fluid mechanics in the design, engineering, and
operation of refrigeration and cooling systems as well as efficient piping and duct systems
design and associated room air distribution systems flow machines, and control systems
4.
Use contemporary issues of ozone depletion and global warming hazards in thermal systems

Assignment Objective
Conducting a facility study and estimating the cooling load of a lecture room or a hall within
MEC that can accommodate at least 35 people.
• Determine the size of different components of the air-conditioning equipment and select an
•
appropriate air-conditioning system for the selected facility.
Determining the duct size and piping system configuration.
Compare your design with the existing one.
Prepare the layout drawing using AutoCAD software or other compatible software.
Creating an air conditioning system with minimal ozone depletion and global warming effects.
• Calculation of the air-conditioning system's initial and ongoing costs.
Assignment Tasks
1. Design Parameters
✓
Temperature range: 22 to 25°C
✓ Relative Humidity: 40 to 60%
Airspeed: 15 m/min
Room occupancy: at least 35 people.
2. Introduction
Air conditioning is a thermos-fluid science application in which the environment's weather may be
adjusted for human comfort and the preservation of various materials during storage, transportation,
and other processes. The project guide outlines the tasks that students must complete, as well as the
marking grids and basic design specifications. Students are expected to determine a facility's cooling
load, choose an acceptable type of air-conditioning system, identify duct size and layout, estimate air-
conditioning system expenses, etc., as described in this guide.
Task 1
Proposal Preparation
The proposal should contain the following items:

(10 marks)
Page 2 of 15 i.
Title
-
Design of Thermal Systems (MECH-0009.1) — Spring-2024 - CW (Design Project) - R - QP
A proper title for the project has to be selected that describes the actual design which will be
done in the project.
ii.
Background
The background section gives a general overview of the project. The chosen room type, size, and
orientation, as well as the underlying principles of air conditioning, types of air-conditioning
systems, and so on. The introductory section can also include a literature review, the subject
under inquiry, what the project is all about, the importance of the project, and so on. This section
assists any technical person who is unfamiliar with the subject being investigated in
understanding the project.
iii.
Problem Statement
The problem statement contains a clear and concise statement of the problem that is going to
be solved by the proposed research.
iv.
Objectives of the Project
This section should include what the project is intended to solve specific to the selected room.
The objectives should be SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time-bound) and
include a concise statement describing the research's aim or products. The goal(s) should be
stated positively (e.g., to develop, to determine, to measure, rather than broad generalities, such
as, to investigate, to study).
V.
Methodology
This section lays out the strategy for achieving the project's goals in a clear, precise, and thorough
manner. The database used in the design, the method of data analysis, the processes in the
design process, and the analytical, empirical, and theoretical principles employed in the design
must all be addressed.
vi.
Schedule
This section provides a timetable or the project action plan which explains each of the tasks to
be carried out and the anticipated time for completion (the timeframe should consider the

submission date of the project work). Use a bar chart to show the tasks to be done and the time
frame to complete them.
vii.
Reference
This section should provide a list of the sources or academic works that have been used in the
proposal writing. Follow APA Reference Style.
Task 2
(60 marks)
i.
Air conditioning system design and drawing preparation
The design of the air conditioning system should address the objectives stated in the
assignment objective section (selection of system components, determination of the capacities
of different components, i.e., compressor, condenser, fan, dryer, expansion valve, evaporator,
and blower).
ii.
Project Report
The main topics included in the project report are more or less similar to the project proposal.
However, the content of the project report is more detailed and the discussions are more
realistic which is based on the investigations and findings of the study of the project work. The
content of the project has to incorporate at least the topics mentioned in the objective section.
Task 3
(30 marks)
Presentation (individual)
The student is expected to discuss the procedures, relationships, assumptions, design
calculations, justifications for selecting different components of the air conditioning system. In
addition, the student should highlight his/her contribution to the project work. The student is
also expected to give an appropriate answer to questions asked during the presentation from
any section of the project.
