If you have commenced with an older version of this assignment, you are permitted to continue, but we kindly ask that you indicate this to your tutor when submitting your work. Note that you may request a copy of an older assignment version from your tutor or Student Services. In assignment 1, you researched a range of communication techniques that interior designers can use in their projects. In assignments 2 and 3, you are going to put this knowledge into practice. You will learn how to produce a site survey and interpret a client's brief before creating a drawing package that includes design inspirations and accurate scale drawings. Context for assignments 2 and 3 A client has asked you to create a new design for their living room that reflects a Contemporary design style and include new floor and wall coverings, and window treatments. Note: For assignments 2 and 3, please ask a friend or family member to act as your client. In assignment 3, you will present your design and receive feedback from your client, so it is important to ensure that the person you choose is in a position to participate in the meeting that will be conducted in English. Task 1 In a sketchbook, produce the following documents (A-D) using a separate section of your sketchbook for each document. Make sure that each section of your sketchbook is clearly labelled: A. Site Survey Site surveys are a crucial part of the design process to understand how the space could best be used and to draw accurate plans. • Conduct a site survey of your client's space documenting all relevant details. • The site survey should include the accurate taking of measurements and photographs of the space. B. Client Brief • Following your site survey, meet with your client to complete a client brief to understand the client's wishes for the design in detail. • Use bullet points to document your client's ideas and wishes. • Take note of anything that could impact the design (e.g. small children use the space). C. Concept board Using the information collected from your site survey and client brief, explore ideas for your design. • Research images, colours, textures, and any other images that could convey your design concept's inspiration, mood and ambience. • Create a concept board that represents the broad view of your concept in terms of the atmosphere, mood and ambience of your design idea. • Cite and reference all sources you use in your concept board. Please refer to the 'Guide to Harvard Citing and Referencing' in your OLC for more information. D. Client Feedback Client feedback is essential to ensure that your design meets their taste and is in line with the space you are working with. • Present your concept board to your client and ask them for feedback on your ideas. • Take a note of all the feedback you receive and write a short report (200-250 words) evaluating your design ideas in response to the feedback. Your report should include any adjustments or further requirements mentioned by the client. If your client does not suggest any changes, explain why this is the case. • Finally, modify your concept board (if necessary) in response to your client's suggestions. Add your modified concept board and update your reference list in your sketchbook. Deliverable: • Your sketchbook, containing documents A-D, saved as a PDF and labelled 'Assignment 2, sketchbook - Task 1'. Tips: • Consult the documents and course materials provided with this assignment for further details on how to complete your work • It is important to note that a concept board is a board view of an initial concept for a design idea. In its simplest form, it shows a potential design's mood, ambience, texture and feel. It does not depict specific samples of materials or images of particular furniture for the final design. • When undertaking your site survey, familiarise yourself with the outside of the property by considering the location, property type and the main entry point. Take a photograph of the exterior and entrance points and think about how you get to the room being surveyed (e.g. do you need to pass through a narrow hallway?) Task 2 In this task, you will test the following communication techniques to produce presentation documentation for your design: • Floor plan and elevation drawing • Use the information you gathered during your site survey to draw a floor plan and one elevation of the sitting room, without the furniture and to scale (recommended scale - 1:50 or 1:20) Sample board ⚫ Manually produce an A4 sample board that at a minimum, shows the materials for flooring, wallcoverings, window treatments and some critical items of furniture. • Make every effort to source actual material samples where you can and use good quality images where you cannot source authentic materials. ⚫ Scan or photograph your communication documents and save them as a PDF file. • Produce a separate reference list for all images and materials you have included within your sample board. You can find further instructions on how to produce and label a sample board in the assignment materials included with this assignment. Tips: • Draw each technical drawing in pencil and, if possible, make photocopies before inking in the drawing. This will help you in case you make any errors, and you won't need to start again from the beginning. • Cite and reference all sources you use in your sample board. Please refer to the 'Guide to Harvard Citing and Referencing' in your OLC for more information. Deliverables • Your floor plan, elevation and sample board, saved as a single PDF and labelled 'Assignment 2 Design Documents - Task 2' Task 3 Produce a drawing package using the communication documents you created in task 2. Your package should include at least: • 1 technical floor plan • 1 sample board ⚫ 1 reference list for your sample board To create your drawing package, you should evaluate the quality of the work you produced in task 2 to determine which documents to include. To do this, you must further develop your documents from task 2 to bring your design message across more clearly, including additional drawings, sketches or samples. The drawing package should represent you and your work as an interior designer, so it is recommended that you incorporate your logo. You will use this package to present work to your client in assignment 3. Combine your final documentation into one drawing package using standard presentation software (e.g. Powerpoint, Prezi). Tips • When presenting your design to a client, consider the overall presentation and the content. Think about how everything works together to deliver a clear design to your client. • Any previously developed or additional content should also be cited and referenced. Deliverable: • Your presentation package saved as a PDF and labelled 'Assignment 2 Drawing Package - Task 3' Assignment Grading Criteria The following is for your reference. Your tutor will be using this scheme when reviewing your assignment. The following Pass criteria must be met in order to pass the assignment. Once you have achieved all Pass criteria in all assignments within the unit, you will then be able to progress to the next unit of your course. Pass criteria Criteria LO 2.1: Assessed in Task 1 Analyse a brief to define the context of a communication strategy. Review a given brief to identify the context for a communication strategy. The student identified the context of communications strategy by outlining the client brief in a sketchbook; conducted site survey (as outlined in supplementary resource document) (Assignment 2 Task 1 A and B). Criteria LO 2.2: Assessed in Task 1 Analyse a brief to define the context of a communication strategy. Use research and testing to identify users and audience for a communication strategy. The student identified users and audiences for a communication strategy through research of colours, textures, inspirational images reflecting mood and/or ambience as shown through concept board in sketchbook; showed evidence of citing and referencing in separate reference list provided for concept board; testing: received feedback from client on concept board page documented in short report. (200- 250 words) (Assignment 2 Task 1 C and D) Criteria LO 3.1: Assessed in Task 2 Develop a communication strategy, through experimentation, in response to a given brief. Test different modes of communication to determine applicability for an identified audience and message. Student tested communication techniques by drawing a scale floor plan, one elevation, produced a sample board manually; drawings and sample board were completed according to information supplied in supplementary document; included reference list for sample board (Assignment 2 Task 2). Pass criteria Criteria LO 3.2: Assessed in Task 3 Develop a communication strategy, through experimentation, in response to a given brief. Develop final communication outputs for presentation/ distribution to an identified audience. Student produced a presentation of the final design proposal; included at least one floor plan, one sample board, and reference lists where necessary. (Assignment 2 Task 3). To achieve higher than a Pass: It is possible, if your assignment goes above the standard expected for a Pass, to achieve Merit or Distinction criteria. • To achieve a Merit grade for the unit: you must achieve all the Pass criteria and Merit criteria in all assignments for that unit. • To achieve a Distinction grade for the unit: you must achieve all the Pass, Merit and Distinction criteria in all assignments for that unit. Merit criteria Criteria MO 2: Analyse a brief to define the context of a communication strategy. Use communication analytics to evaluate and refine a communication strategy. The student created a concept board based on an analysis of the client brief. This concept board was presented to the client for feedback, and evaluated by the student in response to the feedback in a written report. The student also made appropriate adjustments to the concept board in line with the feedback; if no adjustments to the concept board were made, the student justified why none were required. The standard of the work submitted suggests that the student's reasoning is justified (Assignment 2, Task 1). Criteria MO 3: Develop a communication strategy, through experimentation, in response to a given brief. Evaluate combinations of different materials and processes, for producing communication outputs, in order to refine the message. Student evaluated their drawings and sample board by selecting appropriate drawings and a sample board for the final presentation package based on quality of work and content of the documents; showed well executed drawings and sample board all appropriately labelled; the layout of the presentation was clear and easy to follow (Assignment 2, Task 3).
