A general theme aids in aligning the four language skills ( Pardede, 2019). Consequently, to integrate speaking and listening with reading, I would choose a broad theme for my lesson: Significant Budget Allocation in sports. The lesson will commence with a video based on the chosen theme. Prior to it, the students will be instructed to listen and watch carefully and take notes of the details of the content of the video for discussion later. The listening task will act as a precursor to a speaking activity wherein students will discuss the subject matter of the video. Furthermore, students will be given prompts revolving around the theme to discuss in their groups and present their opinions in class. The prompts will be designed to foster critical thinking and stimulate an insightful discussion with their groups. For instance, does it make sense to spend a huge amount of money on the organization of sports events? Do you think it is better to spend that money on improving the educational and hospital facilities of a country rather than on such mammoth sports events? This kind of 'cooperative learning' engages the students instantaneously (Srinivas, 2011 as cited in Pardede, 2020) and allows them to think critically and enhance their 'communication skills' (Pardede, 2020). Finally, the students will transition to a text-based reading on the very same topic. References: Pardede, P. (2019). Integrated skills approach in EFL classrooms: A Literature Review. 147-159.
