OVERVIEW
COURSE PROJECT ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS
GEOG 502
-
The Course Project is completed in two stages: the Course Project: Part 1 – Proposal
Assignment and the Course Project: Part 2 – Final Submission Assignment. The expectation
in this Course Project is that you design and carry out geospatial related course project. The
project must involve analysis to answer a question – although making an attractive and
informational map layout is part of the final product, simply making a map or set of maps for this
project is not acceptable. Throughout this assignment, you will find and prep your own data,
prepare a work flow chart for the analysis, and prepare a final report that includes not only a high
quality map with all of the required cartographic components but also scientific report and
additional elements that explain the problem, the analysis, and the validity and limitations of the
analysis.
You are encouraged to propose your own project title and work on your own data. However,
there is an option for you if you cannot propose your own project and work with your own data.
The option to work on an existing project data is provided in the course. Still if you decide on
this existing data, you are required to propose your own title, objective, and method with
modifications of the method that is drafted in the example and presented in the video(s) in the
Resources section located on both assignment pages.
INSTRUCTIONS
Step #1: Choose which option you wish to complete for your GIS Course Project Assignment:

own data. All the projects report should be written with scientific writing style. Refer to
the document entitled Using GPS Data to Map and Model Colby Student Public
Transit Efficiency found under the Resources section located on both assignment pages.
The Course Project: Part 2 – Final Submission Assignment should have a well-written
introduction, methods, results, conclusions, and citation at minimum.
Option #2: If you are not able or confident to propose your own project title, you may
choose to work on the Hopkins Transit Station Analysis provided under the Resources
section located on both assignment pages and produce the analysis outputs. You will use
the Hopkins Transit Stations Project Data to complete this assignment. In addition to this,
you will write the methodology you used to get the outputs. Example: describe "Hill
Shade Tool" with scientific writing style. On how to write scientific report, please see the
document entitled Using GPS Data to Map and Model Colby Student Public Transit
Efficiency. The Course Project: Part 2 – Final Submission Assignment should have a
well-written introduction, methods, results, conclusions, and citation at minimum.
