of oxygen? Blood plasma is not made of water, but rather consists of a solvent that dissolves oxygen much more easily than water does. Blood plasma has a greater affinity for oxygen than for other gasses because of the polarity of the water molecules. The water molecules in the blood plasma carry the opposite charge to oxygen molecules and the same charge as nitrogen molecules. Because opposite charges attract, the oxygen is attracted to the plasma and nitrogen is repelled. The partial pressure of oxygen is higher in the alveoli than in the blood stream,so the oxygen diffuses down its pressure gradient into the blood.
