Question

Problem 2: A 25 kg piston is above a gas in a cylinder and is at rest. The piston is moved from its rest position upwards and accelerates accordingly achieving a velocity of 25 m/s once it reaches at a height of 5 m from position 1, which is position 2. Assume the average pressure inside the cylinder as 600 kPa(absolute). The outside atmospheric pressure is 100 kPa. Neglect the change in kinetic and potential energy for the gas only and find the change in volume of the gas in the cylinder. For your analysis, consider the piston and gas together as the entire system. Assume no change is internal energy for the system and use g = 9.81 m/s².Ans: 0.018 m³
