For this project, we will investigate the structure of one of the best known
databases found in pattern recognition literature. We will use techniques from the first
three Chapters of our zyBooks text. Be sure you have completed both the reading
assignments and homework before working this project. You are not required to have
any prior knowledge of software such as Google Sheets and may ask me any questions
about software and technology. Please feel free to email me, contact me via campus, or
set up an appointment to discuss your work
Background:
R. A. Fischer was an active as a mathematician, statistician, biologist, geneticist,
and academic. We will investigate the structure of a data set examined by Fischer. The
original data set contains 3 classes where each class refers to a type of iris plant. We
will restrict our scope to one type of iris, Iris Setosa. For a class of iris, measurements of
the length and width of two specific structures were made. The length and width of the
petals as well as the length and width of the sepals were recorded. Please see Figure 1
to see the various locations and click on the link in the caption of Figure 1 if you want
more information. You need not be a plant biologist to complete this project.
