Project Brief The Dissertation is an extended piece of writing, which responds to research. The Dissertation forms a significant element of BA (Hons.) and BSc (Hons) degrees across the UK, and

will cultivate your ability to independently work, think, process, argue and coherently bring together findings. It also gives you the opportunity to explore a part of, and ask critical questions about, your practice / industry. Ultimately, the Dissertation will support you as a practitioner or professional in your field. Following a period of independent research, this unit marks the final stage of the dissertation process. It involves reviewing the research strategy, analysing the findings, synthesising research, developing a coherent, structured argument and drawing conclusions. You will present the results of your study in the form of one of the following formats, structured as per the Dissertation Handbook (available on Aula): . A Written Text (6000-7000 words) This option is the standard format dissertation that should comprise extensive research and critical analysis of your chosen topic, along with associated theoretical and philosophical underpinning. This is a written text of 6000-7000 words, which should be appropriately referenced, formally written and include images. The text may be heavily illustrated and may be designed in a creative way, but the order and structure must be clear. Practice-based outcome with accompanying 3000-4000 word Written Text This practice-based dissertation option offers you the opportunity to make a new practical outcome (a video, product design, sound piece, footwear, event etc). The work will be supported by a critical text that contextualises your outcome, comprises extensive research and critical analysis of your chosen topic, consistently substantiating your outcome. The paper should be appropriately referenced, formally written and include images. You are required to submit your practical element (or documentation of the object/performance if applicable) along with the substantiating text. • 20-minute Live Presentation (with Q&A) derived from academic research and incorporating 3000-4000 words This option offers you the opportunity to write a research paper for presentation. Your topic should be appropriately scholarly and add to your chosen subject in some way. You will be required to present your paper for 20 minutes to a panel of academic staff - this will be followed by 10 minutes of questions about your presentation. You are required to submit the presentation slides at the end of your 3000-4000 word text. Enterprise Proposal of 3,000-4,000 words with accompanying 20-minute Presentation and Q&A This option offers you the opportunity to present a contextualised, realistic and professional business plan of 3000-4000 words (details in the Dissertation Handbook).
