Question

Required length: 6-7pp. 1. Paper topic. Any one issue covered in lecture, quiz section, the articles. Use 1" margins Papers must by typed, double-spaced 10-12 pt. Fonts Need at least 3 sources (Can all come from reader). For all papers, must show you're in dialogue with the class lectures or discussions. II. Paper Assignment Options A. Position Paper Take a position on an issue. This can be done in several ways. One of the most common approaches is to compare and contrast at least two opposing views (one pro, one con the chosen issue). Measuring the strengths and weaknesses of other arguments, what do these other "positions" fail to see? What makes your case a stronger one? B. Critical Paper Focus on one essay and deconstruct the argument. The longer research essays in your reader would be best for this assignment. Some questions to ask yourself could be: What's wrong with the research methodology (i.e. interviews, census)? What kind of audience does the writer address? Does this audience have much in common with the subjects of the article? What is non-sequitor or illogical about the writer's inferences and conclusion? C. Artwork or Other Visual Projects Focus on a topic, as above, but use another medium to express your opinion. Be sure to include written information on what you are typing to express and explain why you decided to choose the medium that you did. Moreover, if color is used for a drawing, for example, you must explain why you used those colors. You should also explain placement of objects, etc. There is neither a minimum nor a maximum number of pages for your explanation. Basically, you are providing the instructor with an explanation on how you want to be graded. III. Quotations Since you'll only be using articles from the reader for the position and critical paper, you won't need a "Works Cited" page. Use parenthetical notes whenever you quote: Example: "Race and sex are not economic variables"...(Thurow, 225,1)
